gavin had a leg up into designing a good set by being gifted 5 shocklands and a cycle of charms in its core and still couldn't make the cut.

The weakest set in five years, maybe longer. Even sets like Conflux and Mirrodin Besieged gave us cards like Noble Hierarch, Path to Exile, Progenitus, Green Sun's Zenith, Inkmoth Nexus, etc. This set gives us Boros Charm and....foil Boros Charm.

I wouldn't underestimate the power of the other Charms in this set (Falter, 1/2 of Firespout at 2 mana, and Brand are all reasonable options in a single sideboard card that are just not very well positioned at this exact moment in Standard), and I'm interested to see how Battalion and Extort play out -- if they do at all -- in Standard. But yeah, otherwise the entire rest of the set looks like a dud. You have a 4/4 for 4 with the ability to become a spell, an alternate win condition with a lot of Clone effects in Standard and Modern, Flames of the Blood Wrist, and X-burn Spell #2355 as standouts as a follow-up to a set that has paved the way for myriad Standard decks on the backs of dozens of new cards.
