What is the significance of a core set? People say reprints but other sets print reprints so how is it different?

Powerful rares and mythics can be reprinted without needing to fit the theme/mechanics/world of a block. It's also big for nostalgia.

In general though the core set is not very significant, that is why this is the last one.

Pretty cool idea, kind of lame that they are trying to make us care about Nissa though when Garruk is more interesting. Hell, I'd rather learn about another blue walker like Tamiyo, but color equality and all that.

i think it will probably just make everyone wish the characters were still in their origins form, because i guarantee a young and mischievous jace and innocent liliana will be 100% more interesting than a stoic emo jace and a sultry demonic liliana

Prepare for a bunch of marginal reprints with the name of the planeswalker prefixed, like Chandra's Shock and Nissa's Bear Punch.

I recently complained about this somewhere else on this site, but I really miss the story-centric nature many cards from the pre-Mirrodin era of Magic. Even if you didn't read the books, you certainly got a feeling for the narrative going on in the art and flavor text that has generally fallen out of favor for "now we're trying to worldbuild this place that will be scrapped until enough time has passed and people have enough nostalgia for it." We've all moved on collectively to chase around a bunch of cardboard cutouts who are solving global problems in places we don't spend enough time in to really even care about (I still have no idea what happened when we went back to Ravnica, aside from Jace is now the guildpact according to m15... I also have no idea what that means). Hell, I don't even know if the new phyrexians are supposed to be a threat anymore or not. Is Karn still on Mirrodin? I have no idea because there's something like 4 cards per block that give any indication of narrative at this point.

I'm hoping that the new direction and theme of Origins shows that Wizards is trying to change that and flesh out these cardboard cutouts so that I can better imprint myself onto them to make my enjoyment of casting spells as an all powerful planeswalker more palatable.

Not sure if serious. Will answer anyway.

There are books. And Uncharted Realms.

Jace became the living guildpact which essentially means that the guilds have to do what he says (or, more likely, can't do what he tells them not to do). This is apparently important for the entire plane of Ravnica to avoid imploding.

The New Phyrexians have complete control of Mirrodin. The resistance was crushed and Koth was killed. I believe Elesh Norn basically is running the show with the other praetors deferring to her somewhat, but I might be remembering wrong there. They haven't developed planar portals yet, so aren't a threat to other planes, though they are trying to figure that out.

Karn is not on Mirrodin. He left to go check on the other worlds he'd stepped on over the years in case more Phyrexian oil leaked out of his boot on those planes.

Anything else?

Well, there's a small chance that he escaped. The plan was to have him and Elspeth set up a bomb and die together for the greater good, but then he encased Elspeth in rock and forced her to planeswalk away. Considering the previous suicide pact, it's pretty likely that he carried through alone, but the whole thing was a bit dumb.

Yes, how did you get all of that info from the card "Realms Uncharted" (that's the card you meant I think), and how did wizards have the foresight to include that much storyline in a card printed 3 years prior to the culmination of that story?

If memory doesn't fail me Mark Rosewater once told in one of his columns that one of the biggest mistakes of WoTC was having told the full story of tempest in a set of cards, and that they would never ever make that mistake again and such, which always kept me :eyebrow: since I always though Tempest was the coolest set ever because of that, Inquest even had an edition with all the cards arranged in the form of the story timeline

The story used to be the only reason I played magic until I realized I was kinda good at it relative to the other people around me. That's honestly when I think about it probably why I quit around mirrodin. After the onslaught block and then mirrodin story wise its pretty obv they were about to start shitting everywhere.

I've come around to like the Khans flavor quite a bit. Reminds me of some of my favorite Elder Scrolls places and lore. I wish the story was focused solely on the Khans or a single Khan in particular, not on more planeswalkers showing up and leaving.

I dislike how cleanly manufactured the worlds are getting. Back on Dominaria we had all the things. Now, they pick a few races and a few beast types, and that's all that exists on the plane. It feels like Worldbuilding By Numbers at this point.
The story used to be the only reason I played magic until I realized I was kinda good at it relative to the other people around me. That's honestly when I think about it probably why I quit around mirrodin. After the onslaught block and then mirrodin story wise its pretty obv they were about to start shitting everywhere.
Maybe its a demographics thing since the game is old enough to cater to two different generations, everyone who is my age pretty much agrees things went downhill since we left Dominaria and started plane-hopping, novels started being shit to the point they were all discontinued, etc... but maybe the generation after ours jut likes the new setting of "then nicol bolas shows up and EVERYBODY FIGHTS!"
