Embarrassing question: what's our game plan against that stupid dredge deck that's poking around? It seems like such a good matchup, but the couple times I've faced it I've lost.
I've personally only faced it 3x in the last 100 matches and have gone 2-1. (The first time I didn't have a strategy.)

My strategy now is pretty simple . . . play control killing anything that hits the board and don't get suckered by the Lotleth Troll regeneration.

Chained is very good for Lotleth Troll and if they get a Nighthowler or Herald of Torment bestowed.

Keep a Skullcrack handy for if/when they get Whip
on board.

Also, I let them keep a Herald of Torment on board (the life loss is a nice ticking clock for them) and only Lightning Strike it if they try to double bestow it with another.

Had this hand come up in a local tournament yesterday, and before saying whether I kept or mulled I'd like to hear what you all would do and why.

EDIT: Sorry, context: It was game 1 against unknown opponent and I was on the draw.

Mutavault
Ash Zealot
Warleader's Helix
2x Temple of Triump
Boros Guildgate
Sacred Foundry
Q1: If you're playing against Bx Devo or Esper and they Thoughtseize you T1, what are your chances of winnng?
Q2: If you're vs RW Burn and they Searing Blood your Zealot, how likely are you to catch up?
Q3: If you're playing against Monsters and they play Sylvan
Caryatid on T2, do you think you can win?

I've paid for this learning with tickets and a lot of tears. You can have it for free.

Hey, Montu, do you live in Tampa or something? Or do you just really love the Montu at Busch Gardens?

In a pinch, Khaos' beard can help turn this around.
I rarely skip a Khaospawn wall of text because I know there is always piss at the end of the rainbow.

I'm a coaster fanatic . . . my best year I rode 86 different roller coasters.

Montu is my favorite.

I once flew to Tampa (from Cincinnati) just for the day to ride roller coasters. :jam:

A1: Still very good. They just Shocked themselves at no cost to us. It also is dependent on our hand, their draws and ours.
A2: Worry more about getting the first WLH off and keeping Skullcrack ready for theirs. You might have to take on a more control approach with the mirror.
A3: I know I can win. See my rantings about Titan's Strength. TS on an AZ not only takes out Sylvan Caryatid, but everything 5 toughness and down and scry 1. You also can use it on your Phoenix to rule the sky, minus Desecration Demon. Don't forget that surprise attack or block with your mutavault. Try it, you'll love it!
There is nothing greater than standing over the smoking corpse of your opponent.

Well . . . my experience is keeping a 5 land hand does not work out well.

BUT . . . I do agree with you, I like Titan's Strength for
the reasons you mention. The scry is always very useful. I've tested a bit with it, and I personally don't like any more than 2 in the MD. The reason is because (1) it sucks to have 2 in your hand with a hand full of burn, and (2) opp generally doesn't get surprised twice in one game. So, it great to use it and just keep the threat alive so he's forced to keep a "just in case" response open.

Playing in the DE now on modo, won round 1 vs Esper:

Round 1 2-0 vs Esper Control (Elenduriel)
Won game 1 with Chandra's Phoenix, Mutavaults and a little bit of burn, hid YP because it wasn't needed to win
Sideboarding: -3 Chained to the Rocks, -1 Magma Jet, -1 Warleader's Helix, -3 Shock
+4 Rakdos Cackler, +2 Glare of Heresy, +1 Chandra, +1 Mutavault
On the draw game 2
Kept 2 mountain, 2 strike, cackler, glare, phoenix
He shocks with grave turn 2 and doesn't use the mana
boarded in negate - he Negated a Lightning Strike EOT
Won with cacklers dodging Ultimate Price (he Priced my Phoenix, so I mainphased a Lightning Strike to rebuy it because he was stuck on 3 lands) (Won game 2)

These are notes I take during the game to help me in future testing, feel free to comment. I'll take similar notes on the future rounds.

Gotta love punting games away... Chains'd a bestowed lotleth troll before combat, missing two points of damage with my YP$... and lost with him at one life. Guess I need to slow down and pay more attention. This deck punishes hard for even the slightest mistakes.

It does, I always feel like I am rushing when I play this deck because of all of the decisions, but when I finish with 30+ minutes after 3 games, I know I'm playing too fast.

4 Staff of the Death Magus out of 2/3 of the black devotion lists to top 8!! Maybe we splash Black for sideboard Erebos to counter? Also Toil//Trouble did some work in this GP

I don't know if Peak Eruption is the best SB hate, but I pretty much refuse to run Staff of the Flame Magus and it has carry over to GR. With only 10 white sources, I like it more than Blind Obedience.

We all knew this day would come.

It's time to blow up some mountains.

P.S. Squeeze the 4th Muta into the maindeck? Such greed, wow.

I am actually running a different art mountain for my 10th; going to track whether it would be relevant as Mutavault or Boros Guildgate. Time to actually just know; will track over 100 games and report data.

Daily Event Round 2

Postby Nezeru » Mon Mar 31, 2014 12:22 am

Round 2 2-0 vs WB Humans (Azren)
On the play hand: Phoenix, YP$, Lightning Strike, Chained, 2 Mountain, Sacred Foundry. Looking at his history, his last finish was with BUG Control, but he's also played some Dredge. I decided to keep because BUG Control is generally an easy matchup and they don't have a good way to deal with YP$ maindeck, and Dredge can easily be overwhelmed by this card, plus I have a blocker for any flying monstrosities. The low level of burn concerns me. However, both lists he's been playing are running Caryatid, so I'm happy not to have an Ash Zealot here.
His first land is Plains -> Soldier of the Pantheon so I was wrong about his deck, but I still feel okay about keeping.
Second land: Swamp, attack. I go to 18. He Orzhov Charms my Phoenix and plays Xathrid Necromancer.
I Chain the NEcromancer and play one of my pyromancers. He Charms that one too and hits me to 14, he's
still at 17. He plays a Spirit of the Labyrinth and Pain Seer, attacks into my YP.
I won game 1. Not sure how to board for WB Humans!
I'm assuming Boros Charm is cut, and didn't see any lifegain but want to leave in some number of Skullcrack. I saw Eidolon of Countless Battles and Pain Seer. I can't imagine him leaving in Pain Seer against us.
Mortars, Chandra, YP, Glare, and Chained to the Rocks are the cards I want to bring in, but do I have 7 to cut?
I went -2 Skullcrack, -4 Boros Charm, -1 Helix.

On the draw: hand is BGG, Temple, YP, Ashley, Jet, Phoenix, Chandra. I keep and lead with the Gate.
I scry Ash Zealot to the bottom. His first play is Sin Collector, taking Magma Jet.
I'm stuck on two lands and drew the third Ash Zealot I've seen,. He plays another Sin Collector and takes Lightning STrike. My hand at this point is Ash, Crack, Chandra, Pyromancer, Phoenix.
I drew Magma Jet...good. Attack with Ash and pass. Maybe I should have played a second Zealot and upkeeped the Jet?
He plays
Sin COllector #3. I Jet in response and bottom Glare and Ash Zealot #4. He takes my Skullcrack and plays Imposing Sovereign. Ouch.
I still can't draw lands, and with him at 2 cards I run out YP$.
He plays a Soldier and a land. I draw a Jet, he seizes, I Jet his Sovereign and top two Shocks (because it answers his board and he's at 1 in hand, it's probably not an answer to YP) He takes Chandra. He triple blocks Ashley and gets blown out. Wow.
Young Pyromancer is a beast! 2-0.

After he triple blocked and I Shocked his Soldier, he says 'Nice infinite rips.' I pointed out that he had seen Lightning Strike in my hand when he Thoughtseized me, and was walking into a blowout whether or not I had Shock. Some people just can't play this game.

Decklist for DE

Postby Nezeru » Mon Mar 31, 2014 12:32 am

Here's the deck I'm playing:

[deck]
10 Mountain
2 Boros Guildgate
3 Mutavault
4 Temple of Triumph
4 Sacred Foundry

3 Chained to the Rocks

3 Shock
4 Lightning Strike
4 Magma Jet
4 Skullcrack
4 Boros Charm
4 Warleader's Helix

3 Young Pyromancer
4 Ash Zealot
4 Chandra's Phoenix

Sideboard:
1 Assemble the Legion
1 Blind Obedience
1 Chained to the Rocks
1 Chandra, Pyromaster
2 Glare of Heresy
2 Mizzium Mortars
1 Mutavault
4 Rakdos Cackler
1 Spark Trooper
1 Young Pyromancer

[/deck]

I'm still not sure about cutting Ash Zealot, but I might switch to 3 Ash Zealot 4 Young Pyromancer. Ash Zealot is much better against good control players in game 1 in my opinion.

Several times I've gotten into situations where my opponent is ticking up Jace and has Mutavault in play and I just can't attack or draw relevant burn before they ultimate. Is there a solution to this quandary?

Is there a relevant answer to not drawing action? No, that's called variance.

Notes:
The Red staff is bad (its a horrible Dragon Claws - though that isn't a fair argument) mainly due to its narrowness, if you want to gain life from your own burns just run 11 white sources and BO
Black staff is manageable just run more creatures (like 1 drops, VFB or YP$)
Those games above were free-wins, I know but you take what you get.

Round 3 0-2 vs Boros/Dega Burn (TheBez)
On the play hand: Sacred Foundry, Chained, Skullcrack, YP, Ash Zealot, Strike, Strike, mulligan.
2nd hand: Sacred Foundry, Mountain, Shock, Helix, Helix, Chained. Terrible, but I'm going to keep here.
He opens with a Temple of Triumph...go Helixes! Then Temple of Silence...hmm. Still could be burn.
I missed my 3rd land, but did hit a Jet. Topped Mountain, bottomed YP$. Maybe this is wrong but I am playing around Searing BLood this game. Probably I should be playing against Toil/Trouble instead. He resolved a Helix on my 5th end step after I missed another land drop. Good to know my opponent is luckier than I am.
He ended up fusing Toil&Trouble and I got both of us to 1 in response, then didn't draw a burn spell in my three draws. UGH.
Game 2 I boarded in Cacklers and company.
I got another damn one-land starting hand, this time with Jet but it's really high CMC so I
mulligan.
He keeps 7 of course because he's my opponent and therefore automatically lucky. I keep Foundry, Mountain, Jet, Crack, Charm, Chandra.
Lost to his superior luck again, definitely had no path to victory that game. 0-2.

Ya know with 23 lands on the play you have 89.2% chance of hitting your 2nd - and since it was an unknown Opp. R1 and you had chains in your hand and lots of 2cc spells I would of been willing to gamble (though hindsight is 20/20) you can't change variance though.

That's not even close to accurate...on the play I have 22 lands in the deck out of 53 cards, that's a 41.5% chance to hit my second land drop. The chance to hit in two turns is somewhat higher, but if I miss my second land drop, the chance to hit the third is very low.

My losses in that match can be summed up as my opponent having Skullcrack when I didn't have it, and getting stuck on lands two games in a row.

Thinking it through (not tested):

There's a very small window of opportunity when Peak Eruption can cause a devastating loss of tempo. (I've been on the receiving end.)

If you miss that opportunity, its still 5 damage for 3 mana (if you blow up the Mountain your Phoenix is Chained to).

It might cause your opponent some serious angst game 3 if they have to decide whether to keep a high-land hand or risk mulliganing down to a low-land hand.

Several times I've gotten into situations where my opponent is ticking up Jace and has Mutavault in play and I just can't attack or draw relevant burn before they ultimate. Is there a solution to this quandary?

Went 2-0 split; 2-0 split in 8-mans with the new version. Played really well.

I think it is finally justified. You're going to get enough use from it.

I have tried PE pre-BnG days, I know Jund offers 10 targets and Rw offer many more - but like Montu said the window in which its decent is very small (hitting someone with a Vault heavy start is rather brutal) unless your casting it your curve you increase your risk of opening up for a free WLH, and if you wait till you have 5 lands then PE is just an overpriced LS.

I'm siding with Nezeru here.

There's a difference between these two questions:

1) Nezeru's: What's the probability of drawing a land on T2 when there's 22 left in a deck of 53 (Answer: 42%), and
2) MDU's: What's the probability of drawing (at least) 2 lands from my first 8 cards (Answer: 89%)

Don't believe me? Check your math here:

I agree 100%; but I want to see whether the additional upside of:
- free wins draws
- being a 3dmg spell drawn late
- blowing up chained to the rocks

is relevant. Even constraining their mana late can be relevant, making it impossible for them to activate Mutavault + do other stuff; its also just another 3 dmg burn spell late which I think is fine.

I don't necessarily
think it is AMAZING, but I just want to trial it.

So, so far, with 10 games played, the 10th Mountain has been drawn 3 times and every time it would have been better as a Mutavault specifically (in that I didn't need it to be a mountain or a white source). Will try and get to 50+ games before changing anything, but that's an interesting start. Being able to greedily run 4 Mutavalt would be great.

Round 4 vs Bw Devotion (egadd2894)
On the play hand: Sacred Foundry, 2 Mountain, Mutavault, Jet, Shock, Helix. I'll run with it and run out the Vault first to hide info. The chance of t2 Ash Zealot is not a big problem here.
His first play is Orzhov Guildgate so I can get in for 2. At this point he's probably on Bw, but he might be playing Esper Humans as well...I doubt they'd play Orzhov Guildgate though? I don't know that decklist well.
His 2nd play is Swamp, so I have him on BW. Pack Rat will get Shocked unless he blocks. He didn't block.
Turn 3 Swamp, Lifebane Zombie. Oh joy. I really want Searing Blood back at this point. I play a Mountain and attack into it, in case I decide it's a mistake. Probably should have Jetted the Zombie and then attacked for two because it seems better than trading. He blocks...we can trade because I have a Jet and sufficient mana. Perhaps this is poor reasoning. Life totals are 20-16
going into his 4th turn.
Temple of Enlightenment...hmm. I have one of those in my Bw Devotion list so maybe that's what he's on.
I Chain a DD and get in for 2 with Ash Zealot. Life totals 22-8, looking good so far. He knows about my Lightning Strike from his Zombie earlier. He taps out for Gay Merchant of Ass-hotel and drains me for 2...joy.
He plays a second Gray Merchant into my Skullcrack. I have lethal burn and he has an Orzhov Guildgate up, so we're going to game 2.
Boarding: I like to keep in Chained against the devotion versions, he's probably splashing White for either Obzedat, Blood Baron, or both.
+1 Assemble +1 Mutavault +1 Blind Obedience (Whip) +1 Chained to the Rocks +1 Chandra +1 YP$
-4 Ash Zealot -2 Shock
Hand on the draw: Mutavault, 2 Mountain, Assemble, Charm, 2 Chained. I need a white source to play anything in this hand, but I'm going to roll with it. This may be a mistake. I really don't like mulliganing against Thoughtseize/Duress decks.
At this point I note that not one
of my opponents has mulliganed a hand! This is how tournaments usually go for me. He did bottom his first scry card though.
Draw: Skullcrack. Hmm. I lead with Mutavault and pass. He Thoughtseizes before playing a land turn 2 and takes Assemble the Legion, then plays a tapped Shrine so I can get in for 2. I drew my 3rd Chained to the Rocks (still no white mana) and he plays a Pack Rat. I draw another Skullcrack and go aggro with Mutavault again. He plays a second Pack Rat. I topdeck a Phoenix and try to race (he has no Mutavaulats so this might work) He plays Blood Baron (why are people even still on this card? isn't it terrible now? Obzedat seems way better)
I draw YP with no protection. By my math if I attack for 2 here he goes to 10, I can Crack him to 7. I'm at 14 and he can make two pack rats and attack me for 12 and get me to 2, which leaves me unable to shock if I do draw a white source for my Boros Charm/Chain, so I have zero outs if I attack. I stay back on defense this turn. He plays Blind
Obedience and extorts a Devour Flesh. If I Skullcrack it I am negative on life so I let it resolve and take my Phoenix. He can't even swing with everything now without losing a Pack Rat, but if I go to two lands I doubt I can win. I'll do the math if he swings with everything. He swings with everything. If I activate, block, Skullcrack, I kill a rat, take 6 and go to 9. He can't kill me next turn without something good, he'll be at 10 and will be unable to gain life next turn after I Crack him again. If I draw a white source next turn and a burn spell the turn after I can still win.
If I don't block, I take 8 and go to 7, hit him to 10 with Skullcrack, I'm dead on board there, so I'll block.
My draw step shows me my 4th Chained to the Rocks, I'm now out of options and dead in two turns. I'll just pass and see what he does. I discard the Phoenix and pass.
On the play I'm bringing in the Cacklers. I saw Blind Obedience and Blood Baron. I'm bringing in Mortars for a possible blowout as well. I'm
boarding out my Jets and Shock here.
Starting hand couldn't be worse. Temple,. Mutavault, Foundry, 3 Mountain, Chained. Mulligan.
Second hand isn't much better. Temple, Chained, YP*2, Skullcrack, Strike. I'll keep because I have two cards to find a second land. He also mulliganed to 6.
I scry my 3rd Young Pyromancer to the bottom. He gets the turn 2 BlOb (god I hate this situation)
I hit my 2nd land on turn 4. He Thoughtseizes and I Skullcrack him in response to the Extort trigger, he takes Lightning Strike so I can't turn on my Pyromancer and he attacks with Vault. He knows I'm holding 2 YP$, Chained and YP$. He plays Nightveil Specter, which I can Chain on my turn. This seems weak.
After drawing my 4th land finally, I hit Chandra, he attacks it with Nightveil so he doesn't get a trigger. Now I think he's just bad. Then he plays Blood Baron. Yikes, that I don't hav ean answer for yet. I can try to race by +1ing Chandra, but 0 seems more sound here.GOD, HE HAS REVOKE EXISTENCE FOR MY CHAINED.....
.I'm probably screwed.
Then he plays Gray Merchant, Gray Merchant, and I die to a 10/10 Baron...what the hell can I do when I draw all lands and Chandra exiles all Skullcracks and Rakdos Cacklers?
This should be a fine matchup but my draws were terrible. Finishing 2-2 after 2-0 start really sucks, especially because my last round opponent was actually making tons of play mistakes.
