So, I just traded 4 Desecration Demons for a Chandra, best planeswalker in standard. Yay me! Best part, I got the demons for about 10€.

That's a good trade. It looks bad for you from a value perspective (your $40 to his $35), but DD is trash and Chandra has good long term potential.

You want to test something maybe?

[deck]Creatures: 24
4 Firedrinker Satyr
4 Rakdos Cackler
4 Ash Zealot
4 Frostburn Weird
4 Boros Reckoner
4 Stormbreath Dragon

Spells: 11
4 Magma Jet
4 Lightning Strike
3 Chandra, Pyromaster

Lands: 25
3 Mutavault
22 Mountain

Sideboard: 15
4 Mizzium Mortars
4 Chandra's Phoenix
4 Burning Earth
3 ???????????????[/deck]

Haven't tested yet, but it looks fast enough to give Control fits, big enough to power through Midrange, and resilient enough to fuck with Aggro.
RT, it's the Phoenixes that will be giving Control fits. Put them in main.

But creature decks make up a lot of the current meta, hence the Phoenix SB.

I was extreamly skeptical of the BTEs in the CFB Devotion lists, but Karsden's article has convinced me to give it a shot. Since I have 0 Domri Rades and Chandra is better than Xenagos anyway, my plan is to play a mono-R version, somewhere between the CFB list and Cornelissen's.

The Phoenix is also what will let you beat the aggro decks. The deck gums up the ground with Ash Zealots and Boros Reckoners, which are enough in Game 1, and then nips in the air with the Phoenix. Granted, the Dargons have a bigger clock, but you can still get stuck on 3-4 lands all the same. In the Mono Red mirrors, I've learned that (typically) whoever can land their bird first has a huge edge in the match.

The Weirds come in postboard to enhance your ground wall against the Aggro decks.

PyroRed: Aggro heavy meta
PyRos: Midrange heavy meta
RedDevo: Aggro and Midrange mix
...PyRos is just as effective against aggro as Pyrored.

The thought of 4 2-drops and 8 3-drops is gross to me.

I thought so too. At first.

As it turns out, it's not so bad. It's really more like 12x2-drops, if you count Magma Jet and Lightning Strike. More often than not, I lead with a 1-drop, blast a critter with Magma Jet, and then set up my turn 3.

On paper admittedly, it looks forced. It really does. The higher land count more or less means (statistically) you will be hitting that third land drop, which is where you can start riding things out. Against Aggro, landing a Reckoner is enough to make them hesitate. Landing 2 means they ain't going nowhere. Which then means your Phoenix is free to just fly around and peck out some eyeballs.

Try it out.

I'm actually wondering what's the best splash for R/x Devotion.

White gives you: Assemble the Legion, Aurelia's Fury, Boros Charm, Wear//Tear, Scrylands

Black Gives you: Rakdos' Return, Doom blades, Read the Bones, thoughtseize

Green gives you: Planeswalkers

Decisions...
White; it allows you to still run Boros Reckoner.

Also Boros Charm and Glare of Heresy are great against UW control.

I am thinking going GR as Domri is a lot of fun. The version I was considering was devotion build with Shrines.

What I would not give for boil being
standard again.

Re: New Commander stuff

I will definitely be buying the Bant Commander if only for two cards: A black bordered Basalt Monolith for Nin, and Angel for Finality for Kaalia.

And because Borrowing 100,000 Arrows is like, the coolest name for a card ever. 100,000 arrows? Then we shall fight in the shade!

Right there with you bro. many a time I've had to resize my windows to crop out that fabulous sig.

Also, I think the reason why I got so upset at Kamigawa block, is that I was expecting something like P3K again where it was a total conversion of magic to an eastern theme vs what we got which was themes converting to magic.
