I ran against one in a 2 man as well but my experiance was terrible. He went turn 1 thought seize to take my 1 drop, turn 2 doomblade 3 underworld, turn four 4 whip, turn 5 through 8 grey merchant. I think i almost uninstalled mtgo. something close to the same thing happened in game 2, but it was more like demon into 3 grey merchants while thought seizing and doom blading things.

How do we feel about eh Channelfireball Devotion deck and the devotion decks in general?

The black and green ones are just objectively powerful and probably last the season until rotation, and the red and blue decks look VERY powerful, but also have very exploitable holes(playing bad cards, and having a mediocre curve respectively)
You gotta understand, I love the beatdown. I really do. I always have.

Beatdown is hard, though.

I think Black is the best, easily.

Blue can be developed into sonething playable that will continue.

The others are crap IMO.

Agreed. Mogis ain't got shit on that Gray Merchant.

I think black will only get better with the release of the next two sets. Wizards is trying to push mono color a lot, and the only way to do that coming off of three sets of "multicolor is the way to go, bro" is to print very powerful cards. Black typically functions well on its own and will probably see more support for its devotion deck than other colors.

I think Mahara's deck was great personally, and while the red deck was powerful, it's not positioned to do anything relevant for a while(seems great vs. control).

So I'm thinking about building a deck for this. Would any of you guys be willing to help me test for it? Right now I have a mono black deck that is basically devotion with Festering Newt, Bubbling Cauldron and Trading Post.

Although I was also thinking I might just play Nuwen's list minus the Dreadbores and play Stab Wound in that spot instead.

I already do. I also drop him in upside down so my opponents can fully see that crazed face. And then I say, "Gimme sum Suga, baby." Or sometimes, "Hey kid, you asleep?"

Recapping games at States with my buddies usually went like this:

Me: Okay, so Game 1 I'm on the play and I lead off with a Mountain, tap, drop some Suga....

Them:

That's the one I keep going back too.

After playing at States, I've been really contemplating the dragon gameplan. I don't know exactly if I want to do Boros, but I want something a little bit more consistent than the Mogis plan. Also, flying has been extremely relevant in the majority of my games.

people telling you to get rid of Hellhole Flailer are wrong. the body is very aggressive (the 3rd point of toughness is huge) and the ability can be very relevant. having the potential for 4 damage on the board is huge in this aggressive of a deck.

the ability is not "win more" - instead, it is "win one turn earlier." On the play, a curve of Firedrinker Satyr/Cackler T1; Shred-freak/Spike Jester T2; Flailer T3; then sac flailer T4 is lethal, and hits before Supreme Verdict.

Some criticisms - Chandra is really just mugging on stick here... seems like a waste of 4 mana when you really want to be ending the game on T4 or T5. (also, you probably have another deck that wants this 30$ card more...) If you are concerned about the long game, threats + Rakdos
Return seems better than Chandra anyways.

other considerations: Toil and Trouble is surprisingly good. It is a minimum of 2 damage, always; if they are holding a full grip, its great value; and if you flood out, it helps you draw into (usually hasty) beats and stay in it.

Act of treason/variants are nice to board in against midrange.

Augur spree can be very relevant because it answers Loxodon Smiter 1:1 at equal mana. You will never use it on defense, so the potential for blowouts isnt really there.

[ I have been playing variants of this deck since RtR came out, its crazy fast and a lot of fun. ]
He needs some learning.

I was toying around with this list. It reminds me a lot of my final brew from last season:

[deck]Big Red[/deck]

In all honesty, the final 2 sideboard slots occupied by Frostburn Weird could very well be anything else, like Ratchet Bomb, more Flames of the Firebrand, or even Electrickery.

Right, and I was trying to make the point that there are better options in Rakdos right now. And then he called Chandra a waste of 4 mana.

by LP, of the Fires » Thu Oct 03, 2013 2:14 am • [Post 93] - Regarding playing Flailer in Nuwen's deck:

"He's a three drop that plays into every sweeper.

On the draw against control, can't play him on turn 3. Wrath. On the play vs. red control, anger.

In the mirror, he basically timewalks you. He walks into every counterspell. Embarrassed by boros reckoner. I really want him to be good and he really isn't.
"

I was interested in Flailer given the rather hilarious interactions he has with Madcap Skills (Swing for 7, blow up for 7 to the dome), but LK highlights his issues in a meta where Anger and Verdict are likely to be seen and where point removal hoses your plan.

Congrats to everyone on making the efforts at States and representing MOUNTAINS, regardless of how the cards fell. I'm pretty much disgusted by the fact
that I've not been allowed (due to kids' schedules) to either step foot in a card shop or logon to MTGO for so much as a match since rotation... we have such a wealth of deck options right now (I'm still working Nuwen's deck for the most part), but my cards are just gathering dust. Pffft.

Other side of the coin, though...we had a fabulous if exhausting trip to Tulsa this weekend. I need to sleep for 20 hours or so just to get back to human.

More on the trip and stuff later, but I wanted to get in here quick with a salute to those of you who took those who have put in so many hours in the development of decks thus far this season, and further to those of you who went out this weekend to carry cleansing fire to the unwashed masses. :grovel:

Can someone please post up a copy of the black devotion deck from PT Dublin? I've been looking for a viable list to leverage Gray Merchant and want to see what they came up with (I can't get to the mother ship currently due to firewall...)

Thanks!

Went 4-0 tonight with:

[deck]
Creatures
4 Ash Zealot
4 Chandra's Phoenix
4 Firedrinker Satyr
4 Rakdos Cackler
4 Young Pyromancer

Planeswalkers
3 Chandra, Best Card in Standard

Enchantments
2 Chained to the Rocks

Instants
4 Lightning Strike
4 Magma Jet
4 Shock

Lands
2 Mutavault
4 Sacred Foundry
4 Temple of Triumph
12 Mountain
1 Plains

Sideboard
2 Boros Charm
4 Boros Reckoner
2 Chained to the Rock
1 Hammer of Purphoros
2 Mizzium Mortars
4 Peak Eruption[/deck]

Very happy with the small changes made so far.

For comments:

vs. Red Aggro, GW or Big Green
OUT: 4 Rakdos Cackler, 4 Firedrinker Satyr
IN: 4 Boros Reckoner, 2 Chained to the Rocks, 2 Mizzium Mortars

vs. UW Control, Esper Control[/u:
1dm1ga5p]
OUT: 3 Shock
IN: 2 Boros Charm, 1 Hammer of Purphoros
This is about as light as I can realistically go; the matchup is still good because I am not maindecking Reckoner

vs. GR Ramp or Naya Midrange
OUT: 4 Rakdos Cackler, 4 Firedrinker Satyr, 4 Ash Zealot
IN: 4 Boros Reckoner, 2 Chained to the Rocks, 2 Mizzium Mortars, 4 Peak Eruption
I was finding Ash Zealot was just getting walled too often by Reckoner (can't combat trick him), Smiter or just Caratyd. Peak Eruption is just brutal against these decks: it picks off planeswalkers, mana screws them, buys time. It is also another spell for Young Pyro, who has a full 18 spells to trigger him now

vs. Dega Midrange or BR Midrange
OUT: 2 Chained to the Rocks, 4 Shock
IN: 2 Boros Charm, 4 Peak Eruption
I have decided that I will just play through Desecration Demon. I am comfortable doing that with Phoenix, YP and Chandra in my deck.
This configuration gives me more free-wins; but also a HUGE amount of burn (2 Boros Charm, 4 Lightning Strike, 4 Magma Jet, 4 Peak Eruption ~ good luck, have fun!

vs. Master of the Waves
OUT: 4 Firedrinker Satyr
IN: 2 Chained to the Rocks, 2 Mizzium Mortars

vs. Big Boros
OUT: 4 Shock, 4 Lightning Strike
IN: 2 Chained to the Rocks, 2 Boros Charm, 4 Peak Eruption
Your sideboard cards are too important; you need Magma Jet to help find them.

Comments, thoughts, opinions all welcome.

That Bagley's deck is nice except of both maindeck Mortars and Anger of the Gods. Choose one, drop another into Sb. I'd choose MM as maindeck card.
And not sure about Phoenix here. I'd rather have something sweet like Member Swaglover.
