Reasons my son is crying: I said hi to him this morning.
I'm sure there's more to it than that... like he probably realized that I'm not his father (at least, I don't think I am - who can keep up?) and couldn't take it.

:iiam:

Also, how is everyone today?

How does one prepare for a GP without getting tired on magic to the point of not wanting to attend the GP at all? Tips?
Drink Scotch. Lots and lots of Scotch.

Re: Magic burnout. I've always paced myself in everything I do. I actually learned a lot about preparation from all the sports I played through my life, especially football. In high school you practiced hard on Mondays and Tuesdays, then lighter on Wednesdays, and then did simple walkthroughs on Thursday which was the day before the game. You continued through Friday doing a few mental exersizes in your head before finally taking the field relaxed and prepared.

My Magic prep has been much the same way since I started back last year. When I was preparing for the PTQ, I had to play a lot of sealed to familiarize myself with the THS format. For the month prior to the PTQ I'd sit down for a few hours on MODO once every few days when I could find the time and just play, figuring out what the best archetypes were, understanding the most powerful interactions, and how the format played out, all while improving my playskills. I
did this until the two days prior to the event where I then stayed away from MODO entirely and gave myself a pre-PTQ reprieve.

A lot of people make the mistake of burning themselves out prior to big events by playing so much Magic and not allowing themselves time to heal mentally. Magic is a very intellectually taxing game and if you just go to something like a PTQ having played 8 hours of Magic the night before you're going to be VERY tired as you slog through the event. But if you give your mind time to rest a couple of days before the big event you'll be amazed at how much clarity you have as you go through the gauntlet on gameday.

I'm feeling pretty boss today. I got the results back from my PE (Professional Engineer) exam, passed it on the first try. It's like the Bar exam for engineers, so the neckbeard factor is higher.

Biggest pet peeve being a designer: Being asked to do something for free.

Good, fast and cheap. Pick two. - I'm sure this theory can apply to engineering as well.

I have yet to meet anyone who didn't expect all three. My personal peeve is with people who accept the design you give them, act like it's exactly what they wanted while secretly wanting something totally different, then talk down about you to other potential clients because you didn't give them what they wanted.

Or when someone tells me what they want, and I am forced to tell them their idea is terrible.
I know what the fuck I am doing, it is why I can charge so much. When people don't understand the difference between branding and marketing....

I always resort to saying something like this, "Branding is whole different beast from marketing. Your logo is your skin, outer appearance. Its what people will recognize you for. Your marketing is your personality and how your consumer will be attracted to you. Branding is your DNA, branding is what keeps your customers coming back because through branding your customers get a true sense of who you are as a company."

I just play and play, then play some more. For whatever reason I don't get burned out.
We have the advantage of watching our bank grow from multiple fronts (ingame + outside sources) and since our win-rates are high we still get a return from our "practice/testing".

I would get burnt out as well if I was tabletop testing or just practice rooming.
