House of Cards

Postby Tom Servo » Mon Apr 01, 2013 8:01 pm

A couple of weeks ago I checked it out and I was hooked, I love this show. Kevin Spacey is one of my favorite actors and I was not disappointed.

One of the major criticisms I've heard about it is that sometimes the writing isn't as good as the acting, and I can agree with that at times. But it's the first season and I'm looking forward to seeing where it goes. While waiting for the second season I'm going to try and check out the BBC series and the novel (novels?) it's based on.

Even more than that I like what this could mean for Netflix in the future. It was cool for them to release all the episodes of the first season at once, although it does make for a longer wait between seasons. But I think I like the way it was done more than I dislike waiting for a next season. All in all I'm happy how they're spending all that money they're making.
Eric, Ren and Jensen were activists
Heads loaded with theory, their hearts are filled with passion
Shared the same left wing politics
Liked the same music, they were part of the protest movement
Now, Anna presented herself as a feminist
Studied the way they talked and dressed
Fashioned herself an anarchist
Eric fell in love with Anna at the meeting of the crime think conference
He didn't know it but Anna was an FBI informant

The production quality is what I would expect from something like HBO and Shotime, which is to say it's excellent. The writing is also pretty good, I actually enjoy the fact that they openly address the fourth wall. (Which is generally considered taboo in the writing world.)

I really liked it, even though I thought some of the characters could have been done better. (I'm looking at you, Miss Zoey.)

Yeah, Zoey definitely isn't one of my favorites

I had a couple of gripes about Season 1. For example, the cinematography was excellent when they tried the phone text message overlayed on a beautiful long shot. This distances itself from the cliche shots of "OH LOOK AN IPHONE MESSAGE GARBLRAGLE" that plague terrible films and TV nowadays. It was bold and creative. Unfortunately after the first few episodes they got lazy and did the stupid fucking cuts to iPhone message again. That pissed me off so much I almost stopped watching immediately because I loved the first implementation.

You're such a perfectionist, Zi.

I intend to check it out asap.

Having just finished Walking Dead, it's on my list of "short, quality shows to catch up on" right next to Game of Thrones.

Worth it?
