Like, I know the best opening 2-3 moves, after that I get lost.

It's got some long Polish name, that's all I can remember. I figured he was just trying to sac off the pawn and go all Gruul Stomp on the board with the Rooks.

But that takes so long. I'm not going to kill the pawns for him. So he's gotta push them. A free rook can't be worth three turns in the early game... especially since they get clogged by pawns so easily you can't even make good use of them yet.

See what I don't get, and hopefully Blackhound can provide us some insight here, is why he spent a turn getting that pawn out, then ran the Bishop up to put you in the early check and just have the bishops stare at each other until you got frustrated at having it clogging your board, but like, I dunno, thought better of it and retreated the next turn?

Well, that one's easy to explain. He just didn't think of me blocking the check with my own Bishop and then didn't realise that just doing the trade there was the only way he wasn't going to lose tempo. That move was seriously the turning point of the game in my opinion.
