R/W Control

Postby NotARobot » Mon Sep 29, 2014 4:03 am

Hey all, just wanted to throw a thread up for this list that took 7th at SCG NJ this weekend.

[deck]Creatures (4)

4 Brimaz, King of Oreskos
Planeswalkers (11)

3 Chandra, Pyromaster
4 Elspeth, Sun's Champion
4 Sarkhan, the Dragonspeaker
Lands (25)

10 Mountain
3 Plains
4 Battlefield Forge
4 Temple of Triumph
4 Wind-Scarred Crag
Spells (20)

4 Banishing Light
4 Chained to the Rocks
2 Fated Conflagration
2 Last Breath
4 Magma Jet
4 Anger of the Gods
Sideboard

3 Goblin Rabblemaster
4 Stormbreath Dragon
1 Deicide
1 Fated Conflagration
3 Magma Spray
2 Hammer of Purphoros
1 End Hostilities[/deck]

Seems pretty fun, but definitely tuned to take on an agro filled meta - I guess it did well enough vs everything else though. I'm not sure I like Brimaz as the only creature mainboard instead of rabblemaster or something, but I do love the transitional sideboard, easy to take advantage of
what you're up against. What do you all think of it? With some tuning could it be a major contender?

It took a powerful idea from the prerotation standard - that burn is almost never the beatdown - and adapted it to a world without youngpyromancer and chandra's phoenix.
It hit a real sweetspot in the week1 meta. Predictably there was a lot of abzan midrange and green devotion. This deck simply has a good matchup against them.

I don't think there is a lot to say here. A lot of games can be won by removing some threats, playing a sarkhan and casting stoke the flames to the face.

I was thinking this needed a full set of Lightning Strikes in the main, a single copy or two of Stoke, and some Pillar of Lights in the side and it should be ready to face any big midrange or devotion deck.

I mean the only thing this deck was missing to steal wins off people who don't know any better (100% of people) is a set of deflecting palms in the sideboard.

Has anyone tested with this deck? The lack of card draw makes me very skeptical. The power is there, but it feels like it needs something to refuel.

You are entirely correct, Maverick

But, since nobody has figured out a 'real' control strategy yet this might be a cute way to attack the meta :)

In my experience this archetype just folds to any sort of "real" control/permission strategy.
Side in some Rabblemasters, Stormbreaths, or Hammers and you're good. They probably sided out the board wipes for you to take advantage of in the second game.

My local meta has 0 control decks. Everything is abzan/mardu/jeskai midrange....with a few green/x devotion decks and some smaller aggro decks thrown in. This is the list ive come up with.....Id like to take it to game day in a few hours so feedback would be greatly appreciated.
