Inferno Fist isn't good enough, is it? I think this deck just dies to T3 Anger or Drown. Arent' there 16 2 power black 1 drops now? (checks) Nope only 12.

I don't think Inferno Fist is worth it. Same thing with Dragon Mantle. How about 2 Hall of Triumph, 2 Borderland Marauder, and 2 Searing Blood (or maybe Coordinated Assault) instead? Or something like this:

[deck]
19 Mountain

4 Monastery Swiftspear
4 Akroan Crusader
4 Satyr Hoplite
4 Firedrinker Satyr
4 War-Name Aspirant
4 Borderland Marauder

4 Titans Strength
4 Hammerhand
2 Hall of Triumph
4 Lightning Strike
3 Searing Blood
[/deck]

Mana base definitely should include at least 4 fetches since flooding out is the bane of this kind of deck

Running out of gas seems bad which is why I like Dragon Mantle. Also a mana sink. Weirdly I like Prophetic Flamespeaker > Rabblemaster should we up the curve (probably shouldn't).

I've been testing this out a bit

[deck]Creatures 21
4 Goblin Rabblemaster
4 Akroan Crusader
3 Firedrinker Satyr
4 Foundry Street Denizen
3 Frenzied Goblin
3 Monastery Swiftspear

Spells 19
2 Lightning Strike
4 Stoke the Flames
4 Titan's Strength
4 Dragon Mantle
4 Hammerhand
1 Hordeling Outburst

Artifacts
1 Hall of Triumph

Lands
19 Mountain

Sideboard
1 Hall of Triumph
4 Magma Spray
4 Eidolon of the Great Revel
2 Harness by Force
2 Hammer of Purphoros
2 Searing Blood[/deck]

Sideboard is kind of a placeholder for now and I think fetches would be nice, but its definitely faster than most brews people are trying out now. Early sweepers are crippling, but I guess thats to be expected no matter what. Any tips on the sideboard / refining the mainboard?

Been messing around with mono red, tell me what you think.

[deck]
Creatures (24)
4 Akroan Crusader
4 Firedrinker Satyr
4 Foundry Street Denizen
4 Goblin Rabblemaster
4 Monastery Swiftspear
4 War-Name Aspirant

Spells (17)
1 Hall of Triumph
4 Hammerhand
2 Hordeling Outburst
2 Lightning Strike
4 Stoke the Flames
4 Titan's Strength

Lands (19)
19 Mountain

Sideboard:
3 Eidolon of the Great Revel
1 Hall of Triumph
2 Hammer of Purphoros
2 Harness by Force
4 Magma Spray
3 Searing Blood
[/deck]

I've tried to keep the non-creature count high to help Swiftspear and Crusader, and also kept some burn in to get rid of annoying Coursers. Is there anything obvious I'm missing? I'm considering cutting Outburst and Hall to lower the curve further, but they just seem so powerful when you curve into them, I'm a little torn.

In a 19 land deck, i'd rather play Stoke The Flames than Hordeling Outburst.

He's playing fetches for no reason, so I think nothing of it.
You gotta understand, I love the beatdown. I really do. I always have.

Beatdown is hard, though.

Yeah, the fetches' only reason seems to be "Fetches!!1! Order yours now!".

Blinding Flare might be a good option for these decks though.

I think the ideia is "shrink" your deck to draw more valuable cards and don't flood.

Yeah, but deck thinning just for deck thinning's sake isn't worth it, especially in a deck that strives to end the game by turn 4. The benefit isn't worth the life loss, even though life are meaningless for aggro deck.

Josh description for this deck is:
"One big key is that these decks aren't doing anything particularly tricky or overwhelming. They bank on having solid threats, and most importantly, don't drop games to mulligans and mana problems—while punishing opponents that do have these issues. Nearly every single relevant red card being able to swing through Sylvan Caryatid really puts a damper on my favorite two-drop and means you need a better plan for not dying early."

So for him this will be nice for first weeks, where probably we will have some easy winning. But I think Red agroo with rabblemaster have tools to be good and not only in the beginning. Maybe I'm wrong, but I really want to play a competitive red agroo deck :D

I think these decks have some good ideas, but not quite there. The first one seems like it'll be brick walled by a Caryatid/Courser too easily on turn 2, if it's on the draw. Also, from LP's play testing, you've mentioned that Eidolon isn't that good. I think the deck should try to be the aggressor game 1 and have 3 Titan Strength main board instead of Searing Blood. That would let Denizen/Swiftspear make it through Caryatid/Courser as well (Denizen would 2 for 1 on Courser, Swiftspear would just kill it).

I like deck 2 a little more, but that mana base is going to get you killed. 4 Chains, 4 Hoplite, and 3 Ride Down is too hard on 8 white sources. However, if the deck goes up in white sources, it loses tempo, loses mountains, or increases its land count. I'd cut the chains. I'm starting to think that chains is only runnable in a Rwx midrange sort of deck
and even that is pushing it. I'd go heavier on the Titan Strengths than Ride Downs to help with its mana issues and let Swiftspear fight through Caryatid. Although, I like the 2 drops, all of them fight through Caryatid easily.

He's playing fetches for no reason, so I think nothing of it.
He's playing them for exactly the same reason any mono red list has in the past; once you hit two or three lands you want to do literally anything you can to curb your chance to draw more. Fetches bring this chance down by a really small percentage, but it's a small percentage at basically no cost. Unless aggressive strategies are rampant there's really no reason not to play them if you have them.

has too many mountains though, I'd cut 1 or 2 for some Arena Athlete s.

I'd be tempted to run War-name aspirant somehow, maybe cut a few pump spells. The Tom Ross version ran 27 creatures and 17 mountains with a similar "curve" (more a flat line really). That list included four 2-drops.
http://www.starcitygames.com/article/28 ... Sligh.html

With so much pump I'd really want to play Rabblemaster though, as you will get some nice situations where you're "forced" to attack with your token in to their blocker and pump it. Kinda amazed there's no trumpet blast too, I'd play at least 1 in the main.

Scouring Sands is a good choice as well. It's more proactive than Circle of Flame, and the Scry isn't irrelevant either.

These lists look like fun.

The second place deck faced an Abzan Aggro deck in the quarterfinals with 2 maindecked Bile Blight and 2 more in the SB together with 4 Drown in Sorrow. The top 4 deck also faced an Abzan Aggro deck in the quarterfinals with 3 Bile Blights and 3 Drown in Sorrow. What they faced before that I don't know.

Tom Ross has won a States with his version. And I've seen comments from PT players that they tested versions and thought it was a contender for the PT. See the link I gave, and the following: http://www.channelfireball.com/articles ... h-restart/

I'd say the deck is a contender. Of course Anger of the Gods might be more common after this GP, but Bile Blight and Drown in Sorrow are just as bad and decks already run those.

I played the Ross version at Game Day and went 3-2. The biggest killer of mine was drawing into too much mana, which may be bad luck, but it really points to fetches being crucial in this deck. Running out of gas is the death of mono red and having 6 land is an easy way to run out of gas.

Fetches could be a good idea. Floods are why I'd want Harness the Force as well. It's so sweet to cast that with Strive...
Thank you for the siege rhino and polu!

Y'all need to look at the math behind fetches. It is really insignificant considering how short your games should be. Drawing one less land on turn 15 will very rarely change the outcome of the game compared to losing life in the mirror.

Are there any good videos out there watching people play mono red from the past few months?

I don't think fetches are good at all. The deck has 17-19 lands and plays 3 drops, finding a 3rd land is not guaranteed so a lot of the time you will be thinning your deck with fetches even if you need another land to play all your spells.
Moreover, deck thinning is not as relevant as life loss.

Yeah, I should know about fetches and deck thinning, so good to be reminded of the issues. The decks run a few scry cards as well, so that another thing that speaks against fetches.

Dragon Mantle and [card]Titan's Strength[/card] give eight ways to find more gas, which is far more significant than any advantage granted by running fetchlands in these mono-red lists.

17 land was way too greedy in the 2nd place list, especially with Rabblemaster.

You play this deck to run hot and win tourneys. You want greed because thats how the deck wins. You never want more than 2 lands in your opening hand, and you really dont want to draw more than 3 ever.
