Do you feel that Ashcloud is better than Thunderbreak? Can you reliably cast Brimaz with 15-16 white sources? I had to distort my manabase in order to get him on the field.

I never had an issue casting him on 16 white. He's not something you typically want to cast on curve anyway with all the other turn three plays.

I think Ashcloud is far superior to Thunderbreak in a deck with 25 lands and no other dragons. It's a much better card against the best deck in the format and is something I'd much rather topdeck lategame against literally everything.

Dragons are indeed an all or nothing sort of thing. Phoenix was high on my list before Regent. Perhaps I will test with it. I will miss Draconic Roar though. Have you had any issues with your Phoenix surviving a Drifting Death on the other side of the board?

I haven't tested Phoenix since DTK so I can't say. I'm just going off what I would have changed from last week's PPTQ list.

I now realize I never posted said list in this thread, but in the clan thread instead. Here is my PPTQ list for reference (I finished 3rd/4th):

[deck]
Creatures (16)
4 Soulfire Grand Master
4 Goblin Rabblemaster
4 Mantis Rider
2 Brimaz, King of Oreskos
2 Dragonlord Ojutai

Spells (19)
3 Wild Slash
4 Lightning Strike
2 Valorous Stance
3 Jeskai Charm
4 Stoke the Flames
1 Elspeth, Sun's Champion
2 Dig Through Time

Lands (25)

4 Temple of Triumph
3 Temple of Epiphany
4 Flooded Strand
3 Battlefield Forge
3 Shivan Reef
2 Plains
2 Island

2 Glare of Heresy
1 Valorous Stance
2 Surge of Righteousness

If I were to drop the Regents and Ojutai, I would probably bring in 2 Brimaz, 2 Phoenix and the third Stance that I cut earlier. The Roars would go back to being Strikes, obviously. Having said that, my first impulse would be to bring back SBD, but I think he might simply die too often since I can't protect him with Stance.

(POST ROTATION) JESKAI BURN

Postby Jamie » Sun May 10, 2015 1:52 am

and wowie the list i made was the worst thing I've ever seen how did I let myself take that shit i had like 20 one-ofs
I took this deck to a pptq and got second out of 13 people. We played 5 rounds with cut to top 4.
2-0 against gw collected company
2-0 against sidisi whip
2-0 against grixis dragons (yo this deck is actually kinda rad)
ID
ID
top4: 2-1 against a different gw collected company
1-2 against abzan aggro with deathmist denprotector

These results mean actually nothing because of the turnout and I saw no one playing atarkared or monored or even esperdragons. And look at this piece of garbage... how did I think this was ok even on 3 hours of sleep:
[deck]
duders
2 Seeker of the Way
3 Soulfire Grand Master
2 Goblin Rabblemaster
4 Mantis Rider
1 Sarkhan, the Dragonspeaker

gas
2 Anticipate
3 Dig Through Time
2 Ojutai's Command

kill
3 Wild Slash
4 Lightning Strike
4 Stoke the Flames
3 Valorous Stance
1 Disdainful Stroke
2 Jeskai Charm

mana
2 u
2 w
2 rw pain
2 ur pain
4 uw fetch
4 urw tapland
4 ur scry
4 rw scry

board
1 Jeskai Sage
2 Disdainful Stroke
3 Negate
1 Valorous Stance
3 Anger of the Gods
1 End Hostilities
1 Glare of Heresy
1 Elspeth, Sun's Champion
2 Outpost Siege[/deck]
Jeskai sage is a close replacement to stratus dancer and Outpost siege is a close replacement to NarsetWalker that I couldn't get a hold of the night before. I took Firer's list and thought "I don't like rabble but I like more soulfire effects... I don't like charm but I like anticipate... and I want a maindeck stroke"

Maindeck stroke won me 3 games on the spot.

all in all, very solid list Jamie. I don't really like Narset with so much dudes. what about a 1x siege instead?

observations and opinions asked
1- stratus dancer I like it a lot but i suspect will end being too cute or greedy.
2- ashcloud phoenix versus ojutai versus exemplars versus mentor. AAAAARGH. Headache. I'm on a split 1/1 ashcloud /ojutai at the moment
3- would playing magma jet instead of wild slash "backfire"? (pun intended) I'm keeping the wildslash (because I'm a coward lol and I fear RG openings dork->rabble and atarka red nonsense) and I wanna be able to do something with one mana (SGM) but ask to myself the question everyday. I'm very fond to play magmajet against abzan. most notably, i remember losing to esperdragons when i draw too much aggrocards and magmajet seems "lessbad" thans slash against control, even if oh so slightly.
4- Actually I'm on a split 2/2 SGM / Seeker and i've been liking it. note that i play 23 lands --> less GSM late action.

Some of the scg guys were playing with a new jeskai 'midrange' deck that plays 26 lands to support a a soulfire/ojutaiCommand card advantage engine.

Tom Ross 22nd SCG Indy june22 2015
[deck]
duders
3 Goblin Rabblemaster
4 Mantis Rider
4 Soulfire Grand Master
3 Stratus Dancer
2 Dragonlord Ojutai
2 Hordeling Outburst

mana 26
2 Island
2 Mountain
2 Plains
3 Battlefield Forge
4 Flooded Strand
4 Mystic Monastery
3 Shivan Reef
3 Temple of Epiphany
3 Temple of Triumph

shenanigans
2 Dig Through Time
4 Lightning Strike
3 Ojutai's Command
4 Stoke the Flames
3 Valorous Stance

board
2 Arashin Cleric
2 Mastery of the Unseen
3 Disdainful Stroke
1 Elspeth, Sun's Champion
1 Narset Transcendent
2 Anger of the Gods
2 Glare of Heresy
2 Roast[/deck]

Todd Anderson again feels more controlling builds as a maindeck is the way to go, exactly like he said with tokens. It plays zero stokes and zero rabbles. Cruise over dig because finding lands is exactly as good as anything else. I took his list with some changes he admitted himself needed to be made.

[deck]
duders
4 Mantis Rider
4 Soulfire Grand Master
3 Stratus Dancer
2 Dragonlord Ojutai

dudelords
1 Elspeth, Sun's Champion
1 Sarkhan, the Dragonspeaker

mana 26
2 Island
2 Mountain
2 Plains
3 Battlefield Forge
4 Flooded Strand
4 Mystic Monastery
3 Shivan Reef
3 Temple of Epiphany
3 Temple of Triumph

shenanigans
4 Lightning Strike
3 Ojutai's Command
2 Valorous Stance
3 Wild Slash
2 Roast
1 Disdainful Stroke
4 Treasure Cruise

board
3 Mastery of the Unseen
3 Disdainful Stroke
1 Jeskai Sage
2 Negate
1 Valorous Stance
1 Elspeth, Sun's Champion
3 Arashin Cleric
1 Dig Through Time
[/deck]

thoughts
Two 3-1 dailys out of 2 and a split finals of an 8man so I'm three-for-three for hitting prizes online so far.
Sage in the board needs to be a gainsay. Sage is a fun card against control but I always wish I had more counters, and one that hits ojutai and ashiok sounds good.
I miss anger sometimes but cleric is fine and its gas with command.
I board in Mastery every game that plays deathmist/denprotector or counterspells.
Sometimes I wish I had 3 elspeths
Slash is still good even though no one plays it anymore. Keeping SBD decks off SBD is worth it. But I board them out every game against any other deck it seems.
The vs. StormbreathDragon decks would be absolutely terrible if literally any of them played around OJcommand.
I never win vs UB/x control it is always 3 grindy games with me barely losing.
The first list I posted is probably better

Usually I'm starving for more commands. 3 is ok, sometimes I wish I played 4 but I know that's a mistake.

I really really like cruise in this deck over dig but I just don't know. Cruise has lots of obvious advantages...again drawing lands is basically as good as drawing a spell. But then I play the mirror or vs control and if it resolves I draw two land and a V-stance and I wish I just had instantspeed card draw.

I enjoy playing the control plan maindeck but flat-out it isn't good.

I don't understand Goblin Rabblemaster in these list since you don't have many removals to clear a path and you don't have many cheap creatures to eat up opposing removals so wouldn't that slot be best served with additional fliers, burns, counters or removals?

Stoke, Lightning Strike, Valorous Stance?

Everyone's curve is wonky in Standard, and some decks aren't even doing anything meaningful until turn three. It's easy to dismiss Rabblemaster without having played the deck.

Harbringer is a strict upgrade to stratusD. Jace is interesting and no real play until turn 3 is what the deck does anyway.
With so few rw temple and ur temple, I'd say screw wildslash altogether.

Harbringer is a strict upgrade to stratusD.
No it isn't. The two cards serve two completely different purposes. It may very well end up being better than Stratus Dancer though, especially in a deck with Ojutai's Command. "Strict" is a word that gets thrown around far too often with incorrect usage.

I think Jerry's deck has some nice ideas, but it's kind of a mess.

There is no reason to play a stratus dancer when harbringer is available in the format. Maybe you can find some contrive some specific scenario where you wouldn't play harbringer over stratusD but I'm not really interested in arguing with such a person.

How is harbringer in any way comparable to stratus dancer? Countering a cruise or wrath or something is so far and away different than bouncing a single tapped creature? Am I missing something here

Two nearly identical Jeskai burn decks t4'd different regionals this weekend.

Reddit post from one of the guys https://www.reddit.com/r/spikes/comment ... th_jeskai/

4 Jace, Vryn's Prodigy

Sideboard
2 Soulfire Grand Master
3 Disdainful Stroke
2 Negate
1 Keranos, God of Storms

Think Id cut the Stance for the 4th Slash given that Red is gonna be very popular.

Been playing abbot over rabble in midrange. It's alright. A few percentage points over rabble against mono red. The times I OJcommand it back into play it could have been a jace or soulfire and been just as good or better. Rabble is definitely better. Thanks for subscribing to my blog.

Swore off Jeskai and promptly 0-3rd Gp with mono-red.

Decided to play jeskai list buddy made tonight and went 4-0(8-1 in games only losing the game I mulled to 5).

[deck]2 Harbinger of the Tides
4 Jace, Vryn's Prodigy
4 Soulfire Grand Master
4 Mantis Rider
2 Dragonlord Ojutai

4 Lightning Strike
4 Wild Slash
3 Jeskai Charm
3 Valorous Stance
2 Dig Through Time
3 Ojutai's Command
1 Dissolve

2 Battlefield Forge
4 Mystic Monastery
3 Temple of Triumph
3 Temple of Epiphany
3 Shivan Reef
4 Flooded Strand
2 Island
2 Plains
1 Mountain

2 Negate
1 Glare of Heresy
4 Disdainful Stroke
2 Revoke Existence
2 Tragic Arrogance
1 Elspeth, Sun's Champion
3 Anger of the Gods
[/deck]

Last minute change was adding a dissolve maindeck over an island and it was great. Jace is the best card in the deck and it's not really close. Turn 2 jace quickly takes over the game. If the opponent kills it, it set's you up to get value off of command and if they don't kill it, then he quickly transforms and either sits there for a while or wrecks accrues tons of CA. The best thing about jace is that it makes having jeskai charm and valorous stance in your deck actually fine instead of clunky/useless.

The worst card in the deck is probably the jeskai charm, more specifically the 3rd jeskai charm. I think you want 1 stoke the flames in that spot since charm is only really bad on the draw where having a stoke lets you actually have a reasonable answer to cards on board.

Ojutai is kind of awkward because you usually want to hold command up for most of the game and it feels really bad when they kill it. On the other hand, if your opponent taps out, ojutai does a REALLY good job of killing your opponent by giving you tons of value. I wouldn't be surprised if mouthbreather dragon was just better since you can just slam stormbreath and chunk them for 4 right away while still being protected from most of the kill spells that answer shields down ojutai.

The sideboard might need work, but I don't know. In all my matches, I mostly just boarded in counterspells, out burn spells. I could see wanting something like a Jace's ingenuity or Dragonlord's prerogative for grindy matchups.
You gotta understand, I love the beatdown. I really do. I always have.

Beatdown is hard, though.

(POST ROTATION) JESKAI BURN

Postby Valdarith » Wed Aug 12, 2015 3:22 pm

I've just been so unimpressed with Ojutai when I've played with him. I've had a lot more success with Ashcloud Phoenix. Ojutai has always seemed to come down a turn too late for me.

I still prefer harbinger and jeskai charms to rabble/stoke, but I do like the 1 roast as another answer to big guys that can gain you a bunch of life with soulfire.

Creatures+Command.

Command is the shit. Jace is broken.

Ok cool we are on the same page.

LSV and Finkle/Shahar were all on the burn heavy version but I'm not a fan at all n think mono red is just better than that.

Hows Harbinger for you? Surprised most lists arent actually running it anymore. I was looking at Stratus dancer in that spot possibly.

Here's what I play. Revoke is ok but tragic arrogance gets he job done.

It's true it feels like either rabble/stoke or harbinger/charm.

What do you guys think of the new Mentor Jeskai that was featured in Nestico's article?

I'm not sure Im sold on magmatic insights being worth it, but I'd be willing to try it... if only I had a playset of mentors!

The deck can get out of hand pretty fast - ditch some cards (fueling Treasure Cruise), make tokens, draw some cards, play Treasure cruise, go nuts.

If anything, it seems like the best deck to really abuse Insight and Cruise. It's like playing the most unfair fair deck.

I wanted to run it tonight at Wednesday night standard but couldnt get the last 2 insight so stuck with the GP london tweaked list.

It does seem good but not running Jace just seems crazy in its own right.

Doubt I will play it this weekend at PPTQ since I wouldn't feel super comfortable playing it compared to the typical Jeskai lists.
