[deck=Hockking's MTGO List]Creatures 14
04 Eidolon of the Great Revel
04 Goblin Guide
04 Hellspark Elemental
02 Spark Elemental

Spells 33
04x Lava Spike
04x Rift Bolt
04x Flames of the Blood Hand
04x Skullcrack
04x Searing Blaze
04x Lightning Bolt
03x Shard Volley

Land 19
19x Mountain

Sideboard 15
04x Shattering Spree
02x Molten Rain
02x Dragon's Claw
02x Combust
02x Relic of Progenitus
02x Pyroclasm
01x Smash to Smithereens[/deck]

Multiple 4-0 finishes online

Changes -4x Searing Blaze for +04x Searing Blood.
-01x Smash to Smithereens for +1x Relic of Progenitus (dear gosh, Ooze would be a nightmare without this).

I would like too see Anger over Clasm but the 19 lands wouldn't agree with many 3cc spells.

Would you reckon the deck needs fetches?

Running fetches makes a huge differences in the mirror, so I would up the Dragon Claw count into 3x if I was too run 7-8 fetches (I'll be concerned about running 8 fetches with 19 lands and 0 Grim lavamancers).

Maybe:

[deck]Creatures 14
4 Eidolon of the Great Revel
4 Goblin Guide
4 Hellspark Elemental
2 Spark Elemental

Spells 33
4 Lava Spike
4 Rift Bolt
4 Flames of the Blood Hand
4 Skullcrack
4 Searing Blaze
4 Lightning Bolt
3 Shard Volley

Land 19
12 Mountain
07x Fetch

Sideboard 15
3 Shattering Spree
2 Molten Rain
3 Dragon's Claw
2 Combust
2 Relic of Progenitus
2 Pyroclasm
1 Smash to Smithereens[/deck]

I'll take the StS over the 4th Shattering Spree for random goodness vs some other MUs.

I went 2-0, Split - gonna try a daily event now.

I've notice that I tend to lose my matches from either missing lands drops or by one or two life - I'm starting to wonder if Searing Blaze is really worth the Fetch lands...

Beat Junk 2-0 and UWr 2-1 (I lost the M2 because rather then holding up mana for Blood Hand, I decided that it would be find just hold up two for Skull Crack ).

Its fantastic - I even manage to beat a leyline deck in my first round of the daily (take that Restore Balance.deck).

My main issue is just fetch lands or no fetch lands and if we go fetch landless do we use Blood or Blaze

Mulling over the same thing - I'm going to start with Blaze and no fetch's, which is frankly terrifying! :D

Aye, Fetch-less Blaze puts you in a really tight spot in the mirror and against manlands (Junk/Rock/Jund/affinity/control/delver/etc) but not running fetches helps you stay alive

The 2x Pyroclasm also 'feel' odd though I understand and have experience the mana constraints myself (I really think it should be Anger so that you can just auto win vs pod).

p.s. currently 2-0 in DE beating Pod (too bad I didn't notice he was playing
Kiki-Pod until M2 :|)

I've got Anger over Pyroclasm :) Just won 2 2 man's - a mirror - Dragon's Claw and BW Tokens - it was just too slow :)

Fetchless build is nice with Shard Volley. Blaze in the mirror still takes out Spark and Hellspark.

Deck is the sweetest Burn list I've played since the tragic loss of Deathrite - why is there no weeping smilie??? - :D

Gah I lost my G3 vs Twin (I beat him the first round) and he got me with a perfect T3 creep, T4 Twin in the 2nd and 3rd round (had I not boarding in SiS I may have won (funny enough)) its a learning process I guess (it was a pair down as well, how does mtgo determine pair down when I was ranked 2nd by standings).

I need to win G4 so that I can money :argh:

Nice

So you vouch for fetchless blazes? I personally wouldn't mind cutting back on fetches so that I can run the 3rd Combust (or perhaps I should just cut SiS for combust :D)

Well I 3-1'ed the Daily Event and 3-0 one 8-Man, here was my list:

[deck=MDU's Modern Burn]Land 19
12 Mountain
4 Scalding Tarn
3 Arid Mesa

Spells 33
4 Lava Spike
4 Rift Bolt
4 Flames of the Blood Hand
4 Skullcrack
4 Searing Blaze
4 Lightning Bolt
3 Shard Volley

Creatures 14
4 Eidolon of the Great Revel
4 Goblin Guide
4 Hellspark Elemental
2 Spark Elemental

Sideboard 15
3 Shattering Spree
2 Molten Rain
3 Dragon's Claw
2 Combust
2 Relic of Progenitus
2 Pyroclasm
1 Smash to Smithereens[/deck]

The changes I made too Hock's list was the inclusion of 7 fetch lands (I didn't want to run the 8th land since I'm not on the grim plan) I also chose to run 4x Scalding Tarn because more decks are on UR then WR so you can give them a false start sometimes :).

For the next event I'll try:

[deck=MDU's Modern Burn]
Land 19
12 Mountain
4 Scalding Tarn
3 Arid Mesa

Spells 33
4 Lava Spike
4 Rift Bolt
4 Flames of the Blood Hand
4 Skullcrack
4 Searing Blaze
4 Lightning Bolt
3 Shard Volley

Creatures 14
4 Eidolon of the Great Revel
4 Goblin Guide
4 Hellspark Elemental
2 Spark Elemental

Sideboard 15
3 Shattering Spree
2 Molten Rain
3 Dragon's Claw
3 Combust
2 Relic of Progenitus
2 Anger of the Gods[/deck]

SB'ing theory:
Rock/Jund/Green tri
In:
2 Molten Rain
2 Relic of Progenitus

Out
4 Goblin Guide (Draw)
4 Searing Blaze (Play)
Pod
In:
2 Molten Rain
2 Anger of the Gods (Melira)
3 Combust (kiki)

Out:
4 Goblin Guide
1 Hellspark Elemental (kiki)
(I'll keep updating this slowly if anyone else wants to give Modern Burn a shot (I should also mention that it cost less then 70 online if your not running fetches)

EDIT:

Musing: Playing
Fetches in monoR feels very self defeating, I find myself taking 2-3 damage over the course of the game which just makes me wonder why I don't just splash another color... but at the same time it makes Searing blaze so good :frown: I wish we have another alternative too blaze which is good vs Junk/Rock/Jund.

I've not played fetchless enough to vouch for it 100% yet - I wanted to try the original list as is (and it's wasn't as horrific as I expected) but I suspect it was fetchless for economic rather than strategic reasons :)

P.S> I'm very happy you're enjoying Modern after the traumatic horror of your Legacy baptism :)

Fetal position, those two days of magic taught me fear...

P.S. I went 3-1 again, except the beta didn't save my updates so I didn't have my Anger of the Gods for the pod mu (it didn't bold well :frog: grated I would have still won had I draw lands)

Still thinking about the Fetch or no fetch question... I hope our resident modern expect and voices some thoughts on the issue.

Beat Tribal Zoo 2-0 (he was a terrible player) and U Tron 2-0 (speed and Spree)

EDIT Living End 2-0 (speed and Relic) Mirror 2-1 (he mulls to 4 G3)
EDIT UR Delver 0-2 (I hate this deck, SO annoying) Pod 2-1 (G1 speed, G2 failed to draw Burn for 3 turns, G3 he is screwed and I keep him that way by killing Walls and BOP's)

Khaos and LP have spoken, fetches are going in! :) Full 8 'cos YOLO :)

EDIT - Fetches are excellent, unsurprisingly :)

Excellent results Lazer :)

LD also went 4-3 without any play experience and coping a game loss during his event with burn (even though he doesn't know he is playing burn ;-)).

I was wrong he WAS playing RDW

I'm also rather pleased with the fetches, my current grip is how I feel about Enchantments - do I simply accept that I'll auto lose some games or do I just run this respectable manabase:

Land 19
10 Mountain
4 Scalding Tarn
4 Arid Mesa
1 Stomping Ground

So that I can run this SB plan:

Sideboard 15
2 Shattering Spree
2 Molten Rain
2 Dragon's Claw
2 Combust
2 Relic of Progenitus
2 Anger of the Gods
2 Destructive Revelry
1 Back to Nature

nI like running many 2x in combo decks since it means you don't encourage overboarding

Solid Manabase and SB - you're right about 2 offs but I've been finding myself wanting 3 of a card every time I bring them in! Only issue there is lack of room in the SB! :) I'm going to approach my SBing from the perspective of bringing in just enough to prevent them disrupting my combo from now on though - I don't know why I didn't do this before! :)

Are you finding 4 FOTBH clunky at all MDU? I'm pondering a 3/3 split with Spark (
which I still don't like but CMC) or a 2/2 split with Shrine ...

Just won a mirror 2-0, beat Hatebears 2-0, lost 1-2 to UWR - couldn't deal with his T3 Geist in G3 (though he punted G2 in my opinion too)

The only reason why Searing Blaze is better then Searing blood right now is because decks like Jund/Junk/Rock/Zoo/RDW/Mirror exist if it wasn't for these decks which have 3+ toughness creatures then blood would be superior (it also helps that this version of the deck runs lots of trample creatures).

P.S. That Pod deck which CFB designed with Spike Feeders and Angels is a very tough MU, I barely scraped by with a 2-1 victory

Ok current total results with Hocking Burn (100% finish rate):

3-0 (8-Man)
3-1 (DE)
3-1 (DE)
4-0 (DE)

Can I recommend burn in a large event? No, you'll need byes or you'll drop too the fringe decks - even against T1 deck like Pod and GBx you'll find that the games are fought tooth and nail (which is why I questioned running fetches earlier).

Thoughts on Heal's Burn deck vs Hock's Burn deck? I'll honestly be more comfortable playing Heal's list in a larger event just so that I'll have an easier time against Robots and Twin which will be out in droves - that said Hock list is better vs green and control simply because it has more burns.

What does my current 75 look like? Well here:

[deck=MDU's Modern Rg Burn]Land 19
10 Mountain
4 Scalding Tarn
4 Arid Mesa
1 Stomping Ground

Spells 33
4 Lava Spike
4 Rift Bolt
4 Flames of the Blood Hand
4 Skullcrack
4 Searing Blaze
4
Lightning Bolt
3 Shard Volley

Creatures 14
4 Eidolon of the Great Revel
4 Goblin Guide
4 Hellspark Elemental
2 Spark Elemental

Sideboard 15
2 Shattering Spree
2 Molten Rain
2 Dragon's Claw
2 Combust
2 Relic of Progenitus
2 Anger of the Gods
2 Destructive Revelry
2 Anger of the Gods
2 Destructive Revelry
1 Back to Nature[/deck]

Sideboard Plan One (created with the help of Lazerburn)
GBx
Out:
4 Goblin Guide

In:
2 Molten Rain
2 Relic of Progenitus
Pod
In:
2 Molten Rain
2 Anger of the Gods (Melira)
2 Combust (kiki)

Out:
4 Goblin Guide
Twin
Out:
4 Hellspark Elemental (MDU: The x/4 make these cards worthless)

or

4 Flames of the Blood Hand (Lazerburn: The casting cost can't be justify)

In:
2 Destructive Revelry
2 Combust
RDW/Burn
Out:
4 Flames of the Blood Hand

In:
2 Dragon's Claw
2
Destructive Revelry
UWr
Out:
4 Searing Blaze

In:
2 Molten Rain
2 Anger of the Gods (midrange)
2 Combust (kiki)
2 Searing Blaze (Control)
Robots
Out:
4 Goblin Guide
4 Flames of the Blood Hand (draw)

In:
2 Shattering Spree
2 Destructive Revelry
2 Molten Rain (draw)
2 Anger of the Gods (draw)
I think i covered most of the important MUs if you like the Scapeshift, GP Fail and the other fringe MU plan just let either me or Lazer know (I'll also start posting Modern videos tomorrow).

Is searing Blaze better than searing blood at the moment? It doesnt seem like it is.
I thought the same thing and tested blood for a while to good results, then realized that you lose out a lot by not being able to searing blaze a restoration angel for three damage and just bolt then for lethal.

Those situations far outweighed the landfall restrictions.
You gotta understand, I love the beatdown. I really do. I always have.

Beatdown is hard, though.

Took another DE finish with Burn beating Affinity in the finals, maintain my 100% finish rate.

I have to say casting Shattering Spree is stressful on the beta, you get bombarded with confusing popups, flashy lights and triggers so I had no idea if I was doing it right which could have costed me really badly :tears:, not running Grim, Mogg, Fork Bolt or Keldon Megaliths didn't help either

Anyhow I really want something too improve Twins and Affinity MU, my gut is telling me too run Grim (but Grim and HSE don't work well together... this in turn encourages Vexing Devil but Vexing is horrible vs UWr and GBx :gonk:)
so suddenly the best choice is Mr Fanatic but is he really Fantastic enough too make the cut

Alrighty... So turns out there is a Grand Prix in my city this weekend and for my first modern event ever, I will be running Burn!

Funny I ran into MDU on MTGSally since I totally forgot the deck sections here had "Developing"(habit to click competitive).

Been testing the MDU list a ton last night(abieit on Cockatrice) Prob going to buy the deck on MTGO though at this poiint for 62$(with promo code).

Deck sure as hell seems strong. Just a matter of testing and tuning for a BIG meta.

So far- Flames of the Blood Hand I think could be cut to 2 or 3 copies. Possibly for Grim Lavamancers?

MDU, seems like you're in quite the conundrum.

Being so new to modern, my first question is why Mono Red is so good when the mana in the format is really good?

Black and White could be decent additions for some additional burn.

Dpaine, I believe there is already a B/R Burn thread in Competitive. I know my list is there already, which has a small green splash for Revelry. There is also a R/W/B list too.

Also, check out the RDW thread in competitive.

Mono Red is good because the mana is consistent, it hurts itself less, and it's budget-friendly.

Oh ok cool, thanks!

Looks like Heals is better for my meta after talking to my friends who play modern and say Affinity/Pod/Twin is most popular in my area.

Here is a deck tech by Nicholas Heal at the Grand Prix. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K4OmqPFy74E

Looks like he has 4 Fanatic vs 4 Skullcrack like in the list MDU posted.
Also he is playing 2 Shrine of Burning Rage main.
Did he post the change somewhere or is there a more recent event I am missing?

In the Rdw thread, somebody posted a list from someone's stream that claimed they got their deck from Heal. It was mostly a Mono Red Burn list.

If Affinity, Pod, and Twin are big, play Heal's deck with the maindeck Shrine, Molten Rains, Fanatic, etc. The sideboard is fantastic IMO.
