God that Ajani is bad

5 CMC is just too much

New Ajani does indeed suck in the meta right now. UW just draws you out using Elixer of Immortality. He can't trigger heroic either. Lame.

I don't think he's bad - the second ability requires respect - but the five mana does indeed hinder him.

Updated green with Setessan Tactics text. Should have card up with tonight's update.

Having +1 draw a card is pretty fine. Having +1 that mostly wins more isn't the best. Having an ultimate that doesn't win isn't the best. It's like they depowered Elspeth 1 and made it cost more.
I think what holds it back is the M14 Garruk, which does the drawing and impacting the board thing generally way better for 1 mana more. I know 1 mana is a lot and the deck you would play one in is likely not the one you'd play the other, but I think the presence of one will affect the amount of play the other sees.

Stessian Tactics is probably constructed playable. If the +2/+2 fight a green dude sees constructed play, you can't tell me having the same without restriction (but a mere +1/+1 and having to tap to fight :() and also Replicate doesn't at least give the card a shot at the real world.

Having to tap is a big deal...

Thanks for setting this up, NBW!

Yeah but you can't sweep your opponents board with the other one...

If all your guys are bigger than theirs anyway, why not just attack? I don't need a card to help me kick ass with big dudes. What I do need is a card that clears blockers so I can hit the opponent with my big dudes.

You know what card didn't see play? Master Warcraft.

Because you can board wipe an opposing monsters player and get storm death dragon in on the action. I'm not claiming this is even a card worth speculating on, I'm saying its a non-zero bonus to standard the way Mizzium Mortars was before rotation but also not as good as Mizzium Mortars ever was.

It is a niche card that I think will ever see play in a sideboard or in some little kid green deck as a removal option.

I'm essentially saying it is a forgettable card that you would probably want to remember at an opportune time. It's the leftover half of a mediocre sandwich you keep in your fridge and are thankful you have at 2 am when you get home piss drunk.

2 am sandwiches always seem to be soggy. Still good though.

I dunno, Ajani does have one important thing going for him: he has obvious and direct synergy with a number of played cards in his same block.. that's actually pretty rare; the last time that really happened I think was UB Tezzeret, and he obviously saw quite a bit of play when he was in Standard. Sure, on his own, he's a mite underpowered (even with the ability to literally replace himself, as a + ability, the turn he drops), but in conjunction with almost any other card in the block he's quite powerful.
[Note: I actually hate Ajani's character. If I wanted that level of lions group-hugging I'd go watch Lion King.]

Still, on to the bigger question. Can somebody please explain to me what the actual fuck is supposed to be going on in this story? Like, from where I'm sitting it looks like the world that's supposed to be loosely based on Greek myth is getting less and less like the place where everyone's down for
some good ol' sodomy and/or drunken philosophizing and more like a heavy-handed retelling of that one episode of the original series of Star Trek where they beam down and discover a copy of the Constitution of the United States, with a dose of the worst parts of the New Testament thrown in for good measure. I'm starting to get legit worried that the crisis in the next block is going to revolve around saving Spock's brain. :S

I'm skeptical about the new Ajani, part of me wants to like him, part of me thinks he's not where a deck wants to be. I like his 2nd +1 where he basically draws you a card that you need. But damn, 5 mana...

@Pendulum, I kinda know what you mean. All I get out of it is, Elspeth has hardcore PTSD and goes to not-Greece. While there she goes for a little hydra hunting for fun, becomes some god's champion, saves a city from minotaurs, and while everyone is celebrating, an angry hedonist satyr becomes a god and fucks everything up. Instead of blaming the angry, hedonist furry for fucking everything up they decide to blame the heroine. Then... fuck if I know what this set is about. All I know is that there are a bunch of not-Greek dudes fighting different types of furry to stop furry porn from becoming the standard in not-Greece.

The story is pretty schizophrenic. Elspeth has found something to live for, and helps some people out. Completely separate from that, Xenagos becomes a god. Because they're so pissed, the gods go silent and send out the Nyxborn to take revenge on the mortals for literally no reason. But some Nyxborn fight for the mortals for some reason. And for some other reason, Elspeth, Heliod's Champion, is fighting against the gods too. At least, she was, right up until the mortal people started blaming her for what happened for some other other reason.

Jenna Helland is a damn fine writer, so I'm looking forward to getting the novel. Hopefully it makes sense of some of this, because they've done a pretty bad job of carrying the storyline in the cards this block (despite having awesome flavour and art overall).

That story was almost as good as the novels themselves. Thanks for sharing.

Anyone else liking the New Hydra for Monsters List Post-Rotation? Right now it is just a worse Kalonian Hydra, post rotation it could be a legit 5 drop.

It saddens me that I forgot Kalonian Hydra existed.

pro-black was amazing (eyeblight's ending, profane command, terror, don't make me go on), there were tribal synergies, including dual lands, it came down on turn three most of the time, and ended the game in a couple activations

the card was so good, it was in the deck that won worlds

Pro black, creatures not being as good, synergy with tribal, hard to beat in combat, closes a game out quickly and gave you something to do with your mana

It was an elf so pro black is irrelevant for eyeblight's ending

It was the belle of the ball as far as the eyeblights were concerned.

Wrens run vanquisher, goyf, chameleon, profane command, nameless inversion... What am I missing, that deck was like my favorite thing when it was legal.

Could you list each new card somewhere when you add them? It's still easy to see which ones are new, but it will get harder as more cards gets added.
