[Deck]Imperial Painter

Postby Jack » Sun Jan 19, 2014 7:05 pm

I proxied this deck up after Reuben Bresler won an open with it back in the fall, and have been occasionally playing with it after rounds at FNM and on Cockatrice. Next weekend, my LGS is hosting a free, full-proxy "getting into Legacy" tournament, where first place gets one of the Tarmogoyf playmats from Eternal Weekend. I'll be bringing Imperial Painter. Here's my list:
[deck]
8 Mountain
4 City of Traitors
4 Ancient Tomb
4 Arid Mesa

4 Imperial Recruiter
4 Painter's Servant
4 Simian Spirit Guide
2 Magus of the Moon
1 Spellskite
1 Goblin Welder
1 Phyrexian Revoker
1 Phyrexian Metamorph
1 Jaya Ballard, Task Mage

4 Pyroblast
2 Red Elemental Blast

4 Blood Moon
4 Grindstone
2 Sensei's Divining Top
3 Magma Jet
2 Ensnaring Bridge

Sideboard:
1 Phyrexian Revoker
4 Thorn of Amethyst
1 Manic Vandal
2 Ensnaring Bridge
2 Ratchet Bomb
1 Faerie Macabre
2 Red
Elemental Blast
1 Figure of Destiny
1 Tormod's Crypt
[/deck]

It's a great deck. I wish I had a grand to drop on Recruiters. Just don't forget your triggers.

Recruiters are not a grand for 4. judge promo under 100 bucks.
Standard: Red whatever variant is most meta appropriate
Modern: RB burn, infect, Twin, Bots
Legacy: UR delver, belcher

Wow. I could have sworn they were $250 a piece last time I looked (granted, that was back when it was SCG's pet deck). Looks like I might have my next legacy deck.

If you're looking for a place with a good primer and serious discussion of the deck, look here:http://www.mtgthesource.com/forums/show ... al-Painter
I just made the page here because I know the people here and can trust many of their suggestions more than those of strangers.

Without Recruiters, the deck is still about $500, but you probably have fetches and some of the other stuff in here already. I'm planning on buying some of the cheaper shit and finding some nice digital renders for the rest and using them to make full art foil proxies. My current proxies don't even have color ink :(

Think of it like this, if/when you do get the expensive stuff, it just makes it that much easier to build S&T/MUD

Also cut Phyrexian Metamorph for the love of fucking god, prolly a third top

Yeah, I ditched Spellskite, Metamorph and the Magma Jets for 2 Bolts, an Ensnaring Bridge, a Koth and a Top and also redid the sideboard.

She's not that good in Painter. I'd much rather have MB bridges.

An alternative version of this deck plays a white splash for enlightened tutor main board wich can grab all the combo pieces + blood moons + random one of cards like ensnaring bridge, rest in peace..... this way you can also play the alternative win condition of rest in peace + helm of obedience (4 rest in peace, 1 helm in side).

Have you played it? I've tried it briefly, but didn't care for it too much. Splash colors aren't always a great idea in Blood Moon decks. It's a very different deck, and I didn't feel like re-learning how to sideboard and what my answers were and everything.

My answer comes a bit late (like 6 months) , but yes i play the R/W version and after top 8'ing some events in my area i have to say it is strictly more competitive than mono red one. This is the consensus also in the painter thread on the source : the mono-red version is recommended only if your metagame is full of greedy mana bases that just die to blood moon, while the white splash offers answers against nearly every deck plus the ability to consistently tutor up your grindstone.
It is more difficult to play though for several reasons, among them the fact that turn 1 blood moon is no more an auto-slam because then you might not be able to cast your white spells, and the bigger decision tree that enlightened tutor offers (do i just tutor grinstone and go for the fast win? or do i tutor a moon/bridge/rest in peace/random silver bullet and play a controllish game?). The key is a deep knowledge of the legacy metagame so that
you can recognize what your opponent is playing since the very first turns and play accordingly.

Unfortunately, in the last months the price of imperial recruiters has skyrocketed again. They are the only missing cards for me, it is not a big problem because in the area where i live legacy tournaments usually allow some number of proxies, but i would really like to own the entire deck.
