Don't know about the states, but in Canada you can sign up online. They send you a little package with instructions on how to swab yourself, then you send it back by mail. Super easy.

Now that I've been selected I'll have to do a bunch of other tests, of course, but the sign up was a piece of cake.

Manders, she's being admitted today for another round of chemo? Good luck to her.
Yeah, she's there now. This is round 3 of 6.
I hear the best part of chemo is the morphine.
She's not getting morphine, dude.
That is the process about which I have heard.
my sister had bone marrow sampled for something when she was in college and said it hurt like a mother fucker even with IV painkillers. That said, it is certainly worth it to potentially save someone's life.
Indeed. Mom had to have a spinal tap done for diagnosing purposes at the beginning of this, and she was awake for it, and said it was one of the worst experiences she's ever had.
Anonymous. That's one thing I found interesting about all this. If both the donor and the recipient agree to have their information shared, they'll do that, but only after at least a year. I assume that's to avoid the donor getting too wrapped up in the process. Judging by the info they gave me, they seem quite concerned about my well-being after the fact, dealing with a possible failure etc.
It makes sense they would be concerned about your well-being. You are sacrificing a lot
for someone you know nothing about, but that needs your help.
yeah that actually seems pretty reasonable. I wouldn't want to meet the perosn I donated to if I did, because I would feel bad if they felt like they owed me something.
I can't imagine the stress of giving someone bone marrow, and then it being rejected, or them dying anwyay.
Second both of these, but you can take solace in knowing that you did everything in your power to help a human being.
jesus fucking christ. That must be incredibly painful for her... send her my wishes.
yeah, I certainly will find out where I can sign up for the registry soon.

Whoever you got your information from is wrong, man. The chemo itself isn't painful.

Now the PICC line they inserted into a vein into her heart, starting in her arm, that has ports on the end of it that she can't take out for 6 months is another story.

*not Mom's arm, just one I found. Hers looks exactly like that, though.

Exactly. I'm pretty sure I would cope just fine if the patient died despite my donation. You do what you can, no point worrying about things you have no control over. But I guess I'm pretty okay with death in general, so maybe most people can't separate that. I'd be happy enough to meet the person I donate to I think, but I wouldn't really know what to say. "So... how's my bone marrow treatin' ya these days?" :?

Anyway, I said it already, but I really hope today's round of chemotherapy goes really well for your mom.

Hey Manders, I probably should have posted sooner here.

I don't have any specific insight to give you on how to cope with this. My background is from someone who lost his grandfather to intestines cancer, and my general advice might be a tad depressing but here goes anyway:

With cancer as with other life-threatening diseases, we tend to have these denial states in that we look at the statistics and we sometimes think that 30%, 20%, 10% survival rates are statistically possible, and we tend to think that our loved ones will be the lucky ones. My small advice is nothing else than a platitude, but it can be worth re-stating it: Hope for the best, prepare for the worse. From someone who saw is grandfather fade away for long, I'll just say to you that if things go south (which I hope will not happen), it will be time to stop the treatments and make for the best of the remainder of time you have available with your loved ones.
n
Not really a specialist, but I've heard that chemo doesn't increase survival rates that much. Indeed, it may save lives, but the cases were it doesn't are much more widespread. When confronted to low survival rates, many people prefer to eschew a few extra months of life and instead live what remainder time they have without the nasty side effects of chemo, just taking medicine for the pains. So keep this in mind, and I sincerely hope you will not need to heed my advice.

PS: There's this movie with Nicholson and Morgan Freeman which you probably know about that embodies the spirit I'd like to have if dealing with this:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0825232/

Anyway, stay strong and make your time!

Well, her doctor told her to wait until Monday to come in, so it got postponed.

I think you're thinking of radiation. It wreacks havoc on the body, but she's not getting radiation. Only chemotherapy.

I, too, wathced my grandfather fade away slowly, from emphysema, so this isn't my first time encountering that. I'm grateful for that because I know, the only thing I can do, is support her and enjoy the time we do have.

And if that link's too "The Bucket List," that is a GREAT movie, but I doubt I could stand to watch it now. :(

So Mom's still in the hospital. Finances/time have prevented us from being able to visit her this time around, but we talked to her shortly yesterday. She said she wanted to come home and was crying.

I'm hoping she gets out today or tomorrow because the <insert r_0's last name> family reunion is this weekend, and I think it'd be good for her to go. She always loved the family reunion. (It's a 2-day affair that we have every year and is a LOT of fun.)

So, hopefully she gets to go to that.

My brother sings Danzig's "Mother" to her when he sees her.

Mom came home from the hospital Friday. I didn't get to update due to the reunion, but Saturday was a rough day for her. I cooked her an egg and a piece of toast, and she was complaining of stomach problems, which she does every time she gets home from chemo treatments. The 24-hour long treatment they give her just before she leaves gives her the worst troubles she's had through all of this.

She advised me yesterday that they had her consult with a psychiatrist before they discharged her, too. Apparently, she would cry every time they walked into the room, so they decided she needed to talk to someone. She was very appreciative of it, and apparently has been feeling for a while that she needed someone to talk to.

I'd say it's time to find her a support group to go to.

Pfft, that's been her routine since well before she got cancer. Can't begin to count how many times we smoked with her back in high school.

She took me to the liquor store for my 8th birthday. I paid, but I needed someone, and it was her.

lol

I haven't had time to discuss this with her, but she seems to be doing better since they put her on meds.

Sorry I haven't updated in a while. I should have done so earlier, but now I don't have time. I'll do my best to do so at work tonight. If yesterday was any indication, it shouldn't be a problem.

Thanks, everyone.

Yesterday was r_0's birthday, and we all celebrated together at a pub in Arlington that allows other, less legal habits on the back patio. Wonderfully laid back place. We had a ton of fun, and Mom and I had all kinds of guys talking to us, talking about how cool and laid back we were.

Could have had something to do with our bandanas we were wearing. :D

Behave yourself, k8.

So, Mom's in the ICU right now. She and I went to the ER Sunday night because she was running a fever. I was up for over 30 hours with her. The doctors are trying to figure out what is causing the fever while trying to get her platelet counts up. They assured me that she's fine, they just put her in ICU so that she'll have more dedicated care, but it's still really scary to learn that she's going into ICU. The latest news was that they got the fever under control and her blood pressure was up to normal, but they still hadn't figured out the cause of the fever.

I plan to call ICU soon and try to talk to her nurse.

Yeah, that situation almost killed her, but she's home and in much better shape.

Like, literally, the doctors told her if she hadn't gone to the ER when she did, she would have been dead in 3 days, max.

She's doing well. Getting over that infection still. They suspended her chemo treatments while this is healing, and her hair has already started growing back, so she's encouraged to know that it won't take long to start growing back once she's done with chemo for good.

8/14 was her birthday, and we had a Mexican feast for her. I also made her a 2-layered lemon cake with chocolate icing (her choice). It was delicious, and she was a very happy birthday girl.

I'm not calling you a meth addict. I'm obviously calling you a recovering meth addict, Jesse. Stop talking about yourself in the third person, it's weird.

Haha.

So, Mom has, apparently, decided not to continue with her chemo treatments. I haven't had a chance to talk to her to find out why, but there you go. According to what the doctors said in the beginning, all there is left to do is make her comfortable while we wait for the cancer to kill her.

Needless to say, emotions have been kind of frazzled around here lately. Time to smoke (yet another) bowl.
Don't hate me 'cause I'm cuter than you are! - :mh:

jeez.
I'm sorry manders, that's rough news.
I guess if the chances are that low, it's probably better to be comfortable and not be throwing up around the clock and feeling like total shit ffrom chemo
