Dunno about that last part, the guys I browbeat into coming to the GP with me might take offense. I will just consider it a 4 day long Ham Challenge.

Name is Sekuterski, Scott

I'm heading the the GP tomorrow with burn in tow, wish me luck. This is my first tournament larger than a PTQ (and first time playing organized legacy) so I'm not expecting to do well, but damn it I'll give it my all and learn as much as I can

Perhaps we will run into each other there. Hopefully not across from the table, though, unless it is the finals.

There is zero chance of me going to the gp tomorrow, unfortunately. I guess all I'd be missing is the sweet playmat, though, since I'm not even close to good enough to do well.

You'll prolly do fine...unless you run into my friend I lent ur to for the tourney..then I hope you get crushed in 2 ;)

If anyone going to the GP wants to have their cost of entry offset, I really want the playmat and deck box from this event because I am an actual crazy person. Anyone interested, please shoot me a PM.

On topic, one of my friends autocorrect misspelled seas as "Dead" and I had a thought, albeit likely a horrible one, is there any value in Dead//Gone in burn or delver? Dead kills 90% of Legacy's most popular creatures but doesn't go to the dome. However, it also delays a mauling from Craterhoof Behemoth by at least a turn, and turns Grislebrand into a 2-card "pay 7 life, draw 7 cards" combo, as well as bouncing the other non-Emrakul cards of Legacy's re animator and show and tell decks. It does nothing against Sneak Attack.

It is just a thought and there are clearly holes in that thought. Has anyone tried it and confirmed this idea is bad and I should feel bad?

What if one of the two decks is playing Top?

Probably has and probably yes

There are better cards for that spot in both decks

No byes for me. Deck just fell apart in Top 4. On the bright side:

Yes, that is a foil.

Bring it

And it is all over. 2-3 drop with my only wins being against opponents who did nothing. I would put up a tournament report but I am way too emo right now. Such a waste of time and money.

I know that tilted feel, but don't let it ruin your enjoyment of the game. Take some time off, spend time with your lady, then return to crush.

You assume I have one. I am one of those pathetic souls where gaming is all they have. I am not going to make any final decisions until I get home.

I might do Sunday series. I might just chain win a boxes and hope to spike.

Went 3-2 and then lost a really close game 3 to 4 color delver and dropped. I really learned a lot today about the format and how important knowing matchups is.

I'll write a more detailed report when I get home sunday

Today was an interesting attempt to turn the trip into something positive. Woke up late so no chance for Sunday Series. I waited in line for 3 hours for signings, played a total of 2 matches of Magic (one win a box, split in round 3 since opponent had to leave and I was exhausted after a 2 hour match against Stasis since the rounds were untimed.) My wallet and trade binder are screaming at me in pain after what I inflicted upon them. But, after all that, the result was this:

Image
New additions (all foil)
2x Onslaught Wooded Foothills
1x Scalding Tarn
4x Flame Rift
1x Smash to Smithereens
3x Scourge Sulfuric Vortex
9x Unhinged Mountain (8 total signed)
1x Mindbreak Trap
Not sure if fun was had but the deck is much shinier and it was a damn sight better than yesterday.

Damn that looks sweet. No burn lists in the top 64, seems really odd to me!

I thought it would be in prime position to handle the UR delver decks. BL, should your swiftspears have been Lavamancers?

Posted: Mon Nov 17, 2014 3:55 pm
by BlakLanner
They wouldn't have helped in my fights. The room was very hostile to UR and, via splash hate, to burn. Firewalkers, Chills and Dredge everywhere. I beat Miracles and Veteran Explorer. I lost to Stoneforge + infinite counters, Dredge nutdraw, and Infect nutdraw.

The deck I played in The event was +1 Tarn, -1 Swiftspear. The picture is what I played in the winabox and likely the revised version unless I bring back Vexing Devil again.

Now that I am home, bathed and a little less tilted I will go over my rounds. I played the deck in the photo above with +1 Tarn, -1 Swiftspear.

Round 1: Jeskai Delverblade (0-2)
Game 1: He Stoneforges into Batterskull. I kill the Mystic and he Dazes my Eidolon. Vortex eats a Force. I hit him once or twice, he hardcasts Batterskull. PoP on his end step gets Forced. I Vortex, he Council Judgements it and the game ends shortly after.
Game 2: 2x Stoneforge. One dies, the other Blaze gets Pierced. TNN comes down, then cast/equip Jitte. One Smash gets Forced, second gets Dazed. I die shortly after.

Round 2: Miracles (2-0)
Practically a bye. He never saw a Top either game, Counterbalance didn't land until turn 4+. I slowplay only because he wasn't manipulating and I figured he had counters. He didn't but used Brainstorms to get a few spells but put up little other resistance.

Round 3: Veteran Explorer (2-0)
Practically a bye. I had 6 Mountains in play (4 from deck) after turn 2. I vomit my hand. He does cast Titania, Protector of Argoth the turn before he dies. Game 2 he mulled to 4 and kept zero land. I cast T1 Spear, T2 Spear, Spike, T3 Guide, Guide, Fireblast for exact.

Round 4: Dredge (0-2)
Fuck Dredge. Both games on T1 he went Gemstone Mine, LED, Looting - crack LED in response, Flashback Looting. 20+ cards in graveyard. Crypt might have saved me in game 2 if I had it in my opener but I had cut the graveyard hate for the GP in favor of more Elves/D&T/Delver hate.

Round 5: Infect (0-2)
G1: Inkmoth into triple Invigorate.
G2: Glistener Elf, Daze your Bolt, Force your Blaze, Invigorate, Berserk.

I don't have detailed notes of the GPT or Win a Box but will recall from memory.
GPT
Round 1: Tezzeret (2-1)
Game 1: Chalice on 1 to start. Drops Strix, Tezzeret, finds Batterskull. I die.
Game 2: Price of Progress + Smash to Smithereens > Tezzeret
Game 3: Price of Progress + Sulfuric Vortex > Tezzeret

Round 2: Lands (2-1)
Price of Progress + Sulfuric Vortex > Lands + Zuran Orb
He did get the Chasm loop going Game 2 due to an opening Chalice on 1.

Round 3: TES (2-0)
I was insanely lucky. He Therapies my Eidolon both games, goes off, and dies.
Game 1: T2 Empty for 10 tokens, I volley him before his second attack.
Game 2: T2 Ad Nauseam at 16 life (Storm 7). He bricks.

Round 4: UR Delver (1-2)
I blitz him down game 1, he shows me Jitte and a ton of counters game 2. Game 3 I kept a one lander with 2 Spears and 2 Bolts. Died turn 6 not seeing land 2. 4 more cards until second land. Holding double Blaze for the one creature he was beating me down with.

Win a Box
Beat UW Stoneblade in 3 close fights. Kor Firewalker is a real pain to deal with if you don't have Vortex.

Beat UR Stasis in a marathon match. I won game 1 in 2 minutes. The other two games took 2 hours (rounds untimed). Game 3, I had him at one life for 14 turns while he countered my burn and bounced my Eidolon with Jace. He just couldn't get the final piece to keep Stasis around and lock me out for good.

Split the finals because opponent had to leave.

Getting those signed was definitely the height of my trip. I came with one foil just to be sure I could get it done and consider myself lucky to get 7 more signed on top of that. I did not see anyone else getting foil Unhinged signed. A lot of Riptide Labs, Cephalid Colosseums, Supreme Verdicts, foil Zendikar, and sets of regular Unhinged.

Soooo, why didn't Burn put up ANY numbers at the GP? Is it possible we need to look at changing the build?

Posted: Thu Nov 20, 2014 8:03 pm
by BlakLanner
There was significant hate out there. Almost all the hate for UR Delver hits us as well. Burn fares poorly in a meta full of Kor Firewalkers and Dredge. UR Delver fared nearly as poorly. I am going to experiment with UR and UWR versions of Burn as well.

BL and Val, if you had to slap a list together for the Atlanta Open...what would you play? is it time to put flame rifts back in the main for the sake of trying to win the race matches vs Delver?

Posted: Thu Nov 20, 2014 9:33 pm
by BlakLanner
I would probably play the one I showed in the picture. I still feel pretty good about the list. Graveyard hate is still up in the air. I don't like Rifts against Delver, personally.

I don't quite understand how swiftspear could be better than lavamancer when delvers/stoenforge mystics are some of the most popular creatures in the room

Posted: Thu Nov 20, 2014 10:18 pm
by BlakLanner
I feel that, with 7 Searing effects, we already have enough for that. Also, I have found that my Lavamancers simply get cast and then die before they do anything. Swiftspears at least get an attack or two in before dying.

The thought of a turn 1 swift spear, exile simian spirit guide, cast lava spike for 5 total dmg excites me. Might try a little brewski for Atlanta Open.
