A CLASSIC

I think this comic isn't just a representation of something funny. It is a representation of a representation. Metahumor - as if the meaning of the comic is not to be funny, but to convince me that Cardboard Crack itself is so grandma-dying unfunny that you can't help but crack a smile

I went 2-2 at Game Day with Big Red splashing black. It was good enough to sneak me into Top 8 and get a Thunderbreak promo, which is all I wanted. :)

Deck felt good, and it felt like I had outs to just about everything. I do not like Eidolon in the deck, however, so I'm changing it out for something else.

1-3 with big red splash black. From my notes the losses were due to my technical play as the deck itself performed well. lost to Jund goodstuff, esper control, jeskai ascendancy. Beat rg dragons. Eidolon did more work than i expected, but dont know if right with only 9 safety oN this end. Cut to two or even full out. Many times i needed md price to hit multi creatures, possibly foul tongues? Drop too many games to Ojutai. All in all, feel good with potential, will keep trying to tune and read lines better.

Was just going to post that article.
""I basically just cut the Dragon Whisperers and the Roasts, added some different creatures, and moved black to the main deck," said Lévy. The new additions in the creature department included two morphs, Ire Shaman and Jeering Instigator, which had been good for a few surprises in the feature match area already, when opponents expected one but suddenly faced the other.

The big game changer, however, was the inclusion of the full four-of of Murderous Cut which Lévy called the most important card in the deck. "I like Murderous Cut. That was what the deck was missing at the PT," he said. "I love the creatures, the Phoenixes and Thunderbreak Regents. They were good and still are. But in a deck like this you need a good removal spell to back that up. I had trouble with so many different creatures, and now Murderous Cut really deals with all of them."

My friend and I drew into top 8 for Game Day both of us being 3-0, only for the store owner to tell us there is no cut to top 8 so it let that store's regular to be the only undefeated to win the mat. So not only was there not five rounds for the 18 people playing, there was no top 8.

Won my Gameday, twice in a row ! with RW Dragons.
Congrats!

Decklist and thoughts? I'll also be running RW on Game Day, so some pre-event discussion would be nice to have.

I'm most likely wrong about Eidolon, but it just did not feel like a good creature in this deck. I don't think it does enough for us, especially with so few direct damage spells of our own. Then again, Levy is 8-1 with the deck with Eidolon, so I'm probably missing something important with it.

Self-inflicted Wound should take out Ojutai, and it might even be more reliable, especially if he's the only creature on the board with white. In the matches where I needed it, I really needed it. If we could swing Crackling Doom, that would be fantastic, but that manabase would slow everything down too much. Murderous Cut in the main with a couple Ultimate Price in the side sounds fantastic.

The more I think about it Roast was good, but it wasn't great. A bunch of our stuff already has evasive potential, and there was at least one game where it sat dead in hand from all the flying things. It's important to have access to it, but maybe not in the main deck. Draconic Roar has potential, even with a reduced number of dragons.

Levy's deck is posted.

[deck=Raphael Levy's Big Red splash black]
Land 25
2 Wooded Foothills
12 Mountain
2 Evolving Wilds
4 Bloodstained Mire
4 Temple of Malice
1 Swamp

Creatures 28
3 Lightning Berserker
3 Zurgo Bellstriker
4 Eidolon of the Great Revel
4 Ire Shaman
2 Jeering Instigator
4 Flamewake Phoenix
4 Thunderbreak Regent
4 Ashcloud Phoenix

Spells 7
3 Wild Slash
4 Murderous Cut

Sideboard
1 Wild Slash
2 Virulent Plague
3 Self-Inflicted Wound
3 Roast
3 Hammer of Purphoros
3 Seismic Rupture
[/deck]

I'm not liking a lot of the changes. They slow the deck down too much when it needs to be faster, more evasive. I still think 24 lands is fine with the curve toppers at 4 with maybe one at 5. He's using the Foothills to fuel the delve on Cut, but he's also doing himself a lot of damage in the process, especially with Eidolon, which I still don't like here. He's got the Wilds as well, which slows things down again. Dragon Whisperer offers more utility in a deck like this.

Cut is an awesome spell, but not as a 4-of here. Two would be better, especially since the smaller creatures are going to die in combat a lot.

Dragon Whisperer was pretty awful when I tried her and Murderous Cut does solve one of the biggest issues the deck had. I dislike Evolving Wilds in here for sure, but I don't mind swapping out Whisperer for sure. Additionally, the extra speed doesn't matter as much now. Now that Ojutai is out of the bag, I'd say the top four decks to beat are Esper Control, Bant Aggro, Red and Abzan Control. Of those, the only deck trying to stomp your nuts early is red. Abzan Aggro is guess is popular enough to also be a concern, but again, you have time against that deck.

Land (24)
4 Forest
2 Plains
1 Island
4 Windswept Heath
4 Temple of Plenty
3 Flooded Strand
2 Mana Confluence
4 Yavimaya Coast
60 Cards

1 Valorous Stance
2 Glare of Heresy
2 Disdainful Stroke
2 Stratus Dancer
1 Negate
2 Arashin Cleric

btw if I had a tournament tomorrow and could pick a deck, I'd probably pick this. Main problem I have with Esper Dragons is other than the Esper mirror I can't play the deck that well.

I scrubbed out of Game Day so hard. Turns out when you meta for aggro and everyone brings control you do poorly... who knew?

I have taken apart all my decks except for EDH in preparation for selling. I still haven't decided for sure. I do think I might prefer a stack of money over a stack of cards I have no time / desire to play... these are dark days.

If you want to bail on Standard until rotation, then now is the time to do so. Cards are only going to start dropping once we hit June and smart money is going to start dumping pretty soon.

Don't sell your decks (except for standard stuff) unless you actually need to. Or at least keep a deck or two for each format. If you don't, if you get interested in the format again, you'll have to get over the cost barrier again and regret from selling your shit might stop you from playing again altogether.

I would be keeping my edh / tiny leaders and selling my modern / standard stuff. There's nothing I want to play in modern and I can't keep up with standard. I would like the money I have tied up in that stuff for a car. Maybe it's just because I'm at a low point, but I'm not getting much out of it at this point. I think I might be happier without competitive magic.

Posted: Sun Apr 19, 2015 10:34 pm

You might not be interested now, but the reason you get into Modern is because, if you buy staples, you don't have to buy decks later. You're setting yourself up to have to buy this shit later.
