BlakLanner is the boogeyman created to scare the little Standard players.
You just don't get it. Its Karn plus 3 land vs. Ugin plus 4 land; thats an enormous difference in consistency and how games sequence.you can't cast it off of tron alone... so what ? karn comes down and removes a permanent, ugin comes down and removes all nonland permanents your opponent controls.
Ugin is another oblivion stone effect that doubles as win condition. I don't think the 1 more mana can make karn better than him. Yes, Karn is slightly better against combo due to discard, but that's it.
Everyone's a winner, we're making our fame,1 - Drunk, surly zem
2 - Nice, modest zem

4 - Confident and funny zem
5 - Condescending jerk zem
6 - Self-aware zem
Any Tron deck that plays counters is not worth mentioning.I get that there are games where casting a turn 3 karn can be crucial, or games where you need two untapped lands to cast karn + counter or any other situation that make costing 7 rather than 8 relevant , but i think ugin's power level is so much better than karn's one that ugin must be played in tron. I don't know if he should completely replace karn or if a split is better, and for sure i leave the decision to more competent players than me, but i am confident that he will see play.
meh. If that were the case then we wouldn't really see any PWers being played. As it stands, Elspeth, Sorin, Sarkhan, Nissa, and Ashiok are all seeing varying degrees of play. Even if Ugin is immediately met with an Utter End or Hero's Downfall, you still get 1 activation. 8 mana is expensive, but to wipe an entire board with the -X ability is worth it in a non-0 number of scenarios. I could also see him paired well with Thoughtseize and/or counterspells in Standard.I think it's more likely to see play in non-rotating formats than in Standard. As long as Utter End and Hero's Downfall are seeing play I don't see it making a significant impact.
Son, I want you to know that no matter what happens between your mother and me, it's all your fault.
RG Tron has bad matchups against Twin, Storm and other "quick combo" decks, but I've found it good against UWR, Junk, Junk, every Pod variant, every other Tron variant and creature-based aggro decks. It's also not even relevant in the meta right now, and Ugin won't change that. Its delver matchup is atrocious, and the only reason it was a popular deck before was because it completely shellacked the (now dead) Jund midrange decks. Still, even before Khans release, I'd put gifts tron>blue tron>rg tron.
