While on the subject of pro-players not being that much better than everyone else, I was watching Tom Martell's stream recently. For someone who is considered to be amongst the greatest players in the world, he makes a lot of noob mistakes, misplays and math mistakes when he streams. Does he just not give a fuck unless it's a pro tour? There were lots of times I though, yup, wouldn't have done that, then it bites him, then he admits it was a misplay. Not sure why I paid to watch this. Will likely not renew my scg premium.

Also Part 3 of the secretist will be released on 05/18 for those wondering about the maze.

Martell is actually a good pro. Now think about all those who are 'pro' because they're high school or college drop outs with no employment opportunities beyond retail/services. The pedastel these players are often put on is not commensurate to their ability; think how much better you might be if you had unlimited play testing time...

I misplay all the time when I'm not giving 100% attention to the game. I did it this morning while playing pauper. Missed a line that
would have won me a game because I was playing the conservative line.

SCG premium streams are kind of lame, you can seriously just go to Twitch and find any random player (I suggest James, obviously) and watch the same quality of play. Or watch any of the Channel Fireball video archives. I particularly enjoy watching Caleb Durward and LSV's channels.

Tom plays well when it counts, and that's what matters.

That's the nice thing about professional Magic. Your background doesn't really matter. Patrick Chapin is the literal prime example of this. I mean, the dude was sent to prison right at the start of his Magic career, came back and was still a beast. And since his return, he's done more for the community than Mike Flores' ego has done for his delusion of self-importance.

Depending on how things look in Theros, I
may very well be making a HUGE push in the Magic scene in the coming year. (I've been saving money so that I can chase pro points around the US.) And I'd like to think that people won't judge me for my past if I end up doing well; not that they could, my past is awesome, but I digress.

Once you get to platinum, all you really need to do is play consistently well. Appearance fees for any GP is baseline $300, and you have the potential to cash out for more. Pro tours are like $2800 and it doesn't cost you a dime to show up.

Ali Aintrazi and I had this conversation a few weeks ago and
we did the math. There's a pro tour every 4 months on average. (Soon to be more thanks to the addition of core set PTs) and $2800 to live around here would be an easy living. He pays like $600/m on his rent, so just working part time and playing in every pro tour would be enough to live comfortably.

This isn't griping, it's just fact. Even if I wanted to, I can't travel to 8 plus GPs a year because there just aren't that many easily available (there's 4 if I don't mind playing sealed twice, which I do).

4-0 tonight at standard with R/g. Maybe its just because of how comfortable I am with my deck now (I seriously can feel when shuffling if there's 61+ cards in the deck, its scary), but I still feel its pretty well positioned. I beat a Bant flash deck 2-1, Naya and Aristocrats are still pretty much a freakin bye, though did not see the new BUG build floating around. I'd imagine R/b is a bit stronger in closing out games and the burn deck is more fun to pilot, but I can't say I'm unhappy with R/g in the current meta either (until I face Junkrites /w Fiendhunter.dec...dear god no)

I looked at the BUG list, what part of that deck is giving you trouble? Simic charm seems much less scary than Azo, young wolf+Zameck guild mage is pretty durdly (especially since I'm not playing LM so only my nobles will ever actually die to Wolf#1) plus I run 4 pillars in the 75. I guess I can see how the angles it comes at you could be hard to
handle, but its still a 3-color "aggro" deck in my mind.

Does far//away and warped physique make esper less terrible? I'm testing those and syncopates(cause acidic slime and sin collecters are brutal) and the deck looks like it might actually be reasonable so long as you go base superfriends and can actually race people.

Both give esper very good tools for combating some of the faster decks, which was esper's biggest issue.

I still don't really understand why people (in other places) are whining about the death of control? Esper is still a great deck. It's not placing because people are not trusting it enough and/or playing it properly.

I had an interesting night last night. I attribute it to being on day 11 of the Ham Challenge.

So as I've mentioned, I've been accepted into a graduate program for a combo JD/MBA degree. Last night there was a mixer for the MBA students.

This was the first time I've ever noticed all the attractive women's eyes following me wherever I went in the room. Seriously. I could have trolled that place for so much pussy last night.

I spoke to the dean who asked me what year I'm headed in to. I said first. She said "oh, you don't need to be here, JD/MBA students don't take their first MBA class until the 2nd or 3rd year." Ok... but you invited me? I had shit to
do so I started to leave.

I grab my coat from the closet and all of a sudden I hear...

"Oh, you're leaving so soon?"

"Unfortunately yes." Then I turned to look at who said that. OMFG. Literally the most beautiful woman I've ever come face to face with. Redheaded, or maybe brunette died red, I couldn't tell. Light blue eyes. Banging body in a little black dress.

"But I could be persuaded otherwise" I said with a smile. I can't believe I said that shit. I'm married.

"Oh?" she says, stepping closer, looking up at me, and cocking an eyebrow.

It was at this point that my wife's face flashed in my mind, and I politely excused myself and left.

Good morning, clansmen!

Sorry that I've been pretty much absent lately, but I've been completely in gear-up mode for Spectrum Art Live 2 which hits here next week. Final count looks like 173 exhibitors--the vast majority artists--including 37 with MtG cards to their credit. I've been chatting with the attendee organizer/contact and am going to do some sideline photo work for them during the event, so I'm working up ins to some cool sidebar stuff. I am a total art geek, so this whole thing has me running around with constant nerd wood. Some of these guys have over 100 cards under their belts, so I'm fretting over what to take to get signed and such. I mean, what they hell do you ask Steve Argyle to sign? I could hand him a whole decks worth of cards. Same with Dan Scott, Jason Felix, Belledin, Reyonds, Post and others. It's a fantasy art fan's wet dream, seriously.

The other big thing is books...major cover
artists abound. My second-oldest nephew runs a Half-Price Books here locally, so we had lunch yesterday and I picked up copies of Brom's books to get signed. My big hope is a major call back to childhood...I hope to have Michael Whelan sign all my original Elric TPB's and Dragonriders of Pern trilogy books.

The boy and I may hit FNM tonight, but damned if I'm sure what I want to play. There's also a win-a-box tourney on Saturday, so I guess I should get something up to speed! I may just get goofy and troll the room with a Varlolz /Troll deck...I just don't know.

@Kaze - belated best wishes to you regarding the pending nuptials, good sir. Just remember that for all the pomp and bluster, the wedding is just one day in your life. Relax as best you can, and take every opportunity throughout the day to make your bride feel like she's queen of the world.
