I will miss the core set. It held most of the reprinted staples from year to year (planeswalkers, mana guys, etc). I do approve of the more consistent rotation schedule once we get fully into 2 set block. I just hope they don't do a ton of functional reprints just because the locale of a block changes. I am still mad at them for getting rid of Llanowar Elves.

Nice to give standard a shorter shelf life. Hopefully things won't get stale as quickly. I wonder what this will do to card prices?

I doubt it will change prices much. It looks like every card still has nearly the same lifespan.

Can we get a summary of the changes for those of us at work? WOTC site is blocked here.

They are moving to 2 set blocks and removing the core set. Standard will consist of 3 blocks and rotate more often once everything currently rotates out.

Interesting.

Found an article on TCGPlayer by Raphael Levy with his reaction to the news:

Alright. That's weird. I just read the article and now it's not even on their front page anymore. The link now redirects to their front page also.

I for one welcome our new 2 set block overlords.

So Khans and Dewie will have slightly shortened Standard stints, and Louie will be the first set rotating on the new schedule, even though it will also be the last 3rd set of a 3-set block. Odd. I think that also means that rares/mythics from Khans and Dewie will be / should be devalued since they'll have slightly shorter lives in Standard.

But seriously, that seems a good move, the sets get more focused, and you can still release dual decks and other commander product for people who aren't into the current block.

The biggest advantage for me is getting rid of the "third block syndrome" wherein staples are expensive/difficult to find because the third block was way less drafted than the previous ones.

Louie being a large set certainly helps.

I find it pretty ironic that Patrick Chapin was talking about the possibility of WotC doing this in one of his articles a couple of weeks ago only to get the announcement today. Insider information or just damn good prognostication?

Or just a fairly reasonable solution to several problems people have brought up. I doubt it was insider info either way. There is a reason he is as good as he is, after all.

Weirdly enough, I was just saying on Saturday to somebody that WoTC probably should just get rid of core sets. Reason being, at the PTQ I was at, all the pack winners/box winners were running them back to the vendors to sell at $2 a pack. Good players don't want the core sets and I've noticed that most newer players typically get into Magic during one of the the big blocks due to an appealing theme/hype of a new set. It made me wonder why WoTC still continues to push core sets at all.

And then Rosewater mentioned in his article that R&D is always asking to whom is the core set aimed at.

variance exists obviously but if you find yourself consistently blaming losses on bad luck, you're either playing a bad deck or are a bad player or are some combination of the two and also part of the Entitlement Generation.
I think the key is to have the integrity to differentiate between bad luck and player error.

I read that Reid Duke coming back from the pro tour with a list of the misplays he made and used that to help himself improve / motivate himself and his improvement in the following year was astounding.

Since then, I've been keeping track of what went wrong in games I lose.
My score sheets say things like: Bad sequencing, punt, mana screw, mana flood, out played, misread opponent, god hand, played to outs, bad keep, loose keep, mulliganed too aggressively etc. I try my best to be honest with myself because I think it's the only way to improve.

My friend took it one further. He has a spread sheet where he records how many lands he had on curve, how many his opponent had etc. as well. Guy is hardcore with crunching statistics, but also serious about improving and accountability.

There are a lot of things we, as players can do, but luck is still a factor. You aren't being honest with yourself (and likely too hard on yourself) if you don't acknowledge it.
if I did this then every game my score sheet would say "you did it again, old boy" with a thumbs up drawn

I'm going to miss core set limited (the last few core sets have been fantastic) but overall the changes are good because they address a lot of small problems at once. It doesn't bode well for certain reprints, but oh well.

It's not a joke. It's a movie reference, tard.

It's a pun based on madding's comment 'old boy' and the film 'oldboy'. A pun is a type of joke.
