Iridium is found in relatively high concentrations inside meteorites that hit the Earth, meaning there's not much of a stretch to literally call it the stuff of the heavens. Stardust, if you will.

Interestingly, there's a particular strata around the globe, laid down 65 million years ago, that contains a higher-than-normal concentration of iridium. That lead to the popular theory that iridium is related to the extinction of the dinosaurs.

I suppose you can use whatever metaphor fits there.
