Admittedly I was a Warhammer fantasy national champ at 15, so maybe it's not the most competitive game.

I don't play anymore.

I won nationals with 6th ed warriors of chaos (abusing the book of secrets on an exalted champion exploit); and had a top 8 in WH40K with Tyranids.

It might have been balls deep in an otherwise not-modern thread. Posting around here is very disorganized. :(

Work...drat.

I just found out that Kansas is having two States...I knew that TCG Fall States was coming on 10/12 (will be in Tulsa for band dammit), but the regional TO is also holding States this weekend. I'm not prepared by a long shot, but if cards make it in here time I guess we'll be representing. We're so mixed up here...Missouri States take place every year in St. Louis (all the way across the state), so KC area players default to KS since it's just a few miles across the MO/KS border.

I think 40k players are much worse. An entire community of Johnny and Timmy's with very few Spikes.
God yes... nearly the entire competitive 40k community looks down on playing powerful lists - even in tournaments.

Imagine sitting across from an opponent in the final round of a large M:tG tournament and having him roll his eyes at you and try to explain why you're a terrible power-gamer for playing 4-of good cards (which is cheesy spam) or playing two non-allied colors (unfluffy) or having Rakdos Cackler and Boros Reckoner in the same list (because those two would never work together).

That's tournament Warhammer 40k.

Australia has won the Warhammer Workd Championships. The US hasn't.

That's because we can't ever find it.

I mean, where the fuck is the Warhaummer Wourld Champiounship anyway?

Get the Sacred Foundries and play Ham's Boros list. Win the Chandras.
I'm curious about this list, so I'd be glad if you could show it (Don't think I can access the brewery.)
Some of the new guys don't have access to the brewery (yet, hang in there it's almost time for promotions) so I'll post it here, along with the explanation of the deck from the OP -
Koth you?
[Deck]Creatures:8
4 Figure of Destiny
4 Young Pyromancer

Spells:28
4 Bonfire of the Damned
4 Burst Lightning
4 Lightning Bolt
4 Pillar of Flame
4 Molten Rain
4 Koth of the Hammer
n4 Flame Javelin

Lands:24
4 Arid Mesa
3 Blood Crypt
4 Marsh Flats
7 Mountain
1 Plains
3 Sacred Foundry
2 Scalding Tarn

Sideboard:15
2 Banefire
2 Rest in Peace
3 Stony Silence
2 Torpor Orb
3 Blood Moon
3 Oblivion Ring[/deck]

I've been brewing this for a few days and enjoying the results. This deck has been consistently powerful when I test it in the MTGO Tournament Practice room vs all the heavy hitters. It loses to random jank (Ad Nauseum, all-in Bushwhacker Storm, Soul Sisters mono lifegain hurdles, etc) occasionally, but it has game against the dominant unfair decks in the format.

The basic game plan is to control the board in the early game with cheap removal, chump blockers from Pyromancer, dumping mana into Figure of Destiny (dodges Lightning Bolts like a pro) and attacking the inherently greedy Modern mana bases with Molten Rain as a value tempo play. Koth acts as a hasty 4 drop, a finisher, or a mana rock that can give you 1 untapped Mountain for instant
speed tricks. His ultimate is no joke either, you'll have to try extra hard to lose with a bunch of lands that can burn for 1.

Flame Javelin helps us deal at instant speed with fatties like Tarmogoyf, Restoration Angel, Smiter and game 1 Deceiver Exarch.

The 1 CMC removal package is robust, letting us deal with mana dorks and value creatures out of pod. Burst Lightning acts as Flame Javelin 5-8 in the late game. They all go to the face for value in the creatureless matchups. No dead cards makes me happy in game 1.

The worst card is the 4th Bonfire or the maindeck Plains, as drawing either in the opener can be awkward.

The Molten Rain helps with the previous worst matchup, Tron, but can be too slow on the draw. It's hard to make this matchup better without Path to Exile or Chained to the Rocks, which isn't out on MTGO yet.

The deck brings in relevant sideboard hate for the dominant decks in the format. Blood Moon hurts Tron, Jund and Junk/Naya Pod. Stony Silence shuts down Affinity.
Rest in Peace destroys any graveyard strategy. Torpor Orb hurts Pod, Soul Sisters and decks with Snapcaster/V. Clique. O Ring is catchall removal for Planeswalkers, Wurmcoil Engines, annoying pro-red stuff, etc.

The deck sometimes has trouble drawing threats and floods out, so it could be helped by a Hammer of Purphoros. Bonfire should probably be dropped down to 3. It may do well with a hasty finisher like Stormbreath Dragon or another disruptive beater like Ember Swallower. The Pillar and Burst Lightning might be better as 3-ofs to wedge in a few more creatures. I like Kargan Dragonlord, personally.

Something could probably be done to help with Burn, which is a very tough matchup with no lifegain or access to Refraction Trap or Lightning Helix.
It could easily be played without any fetchlands, I just enjoy having access to my splash color in games where I want to bring in Blood Moon. It's also a fairly inexpensive list, the mana base (as shown
above) is is the most expensive part. The Bonfires at $8.50 in paper and the rest of the sideboard is very cheap. Koth of the Hammer is $3, which is a steal for how good he is.

It's a work in progress, but that's the skeleton. I've been testing out Shrine of Burning Rage in the Pyromancer slot, using Grim Lavamancer, running fewer Bonfires and adjusting the spell mix at the 1/2 CMC spots. The deck can accomodate 1-2 Chandras, but they're sometimes a little slow for what the deck is trying to do.

After THS comes out, it will likely include some number of Anger of the Gods and Chained to the Rocks if I go towards a more controlling build with Shrines.

Maybe I'm missing something, but what are the Blood Crypts for? Just to have more red sources you can fetch with Marsh Flats?

Yes, I used to have 4 Ashenmoor Gouger maindeck, and this is the old mana base. You could probably play a fetchless mana base looking like this -

[deck=Mo' Fetches Mo' Problems]4 Sacred Foundry
15 Mountain
4 Plains
1 Clifftop Retreat[/deck]

Adding 4 Arid Mesa improves the consistency considerably. I think it's also the cheapest fetch. Running non-Mountains makes Koth's ultimate actively worse.

I already have 90% of the deck, i'll have to try it out. I've been avoiding paper modern since both of the decks I owned got banned in consecutive updates, but that list looks pretty sweet. Any excuse to play Koth again.

Stream was really, really sweet except of technical issues (which were nightmare). I've missed any Kuroda talk - but I think I know what I'd hear (strong matchup against aggro, weak matchup against control). Alex has sexy, sexy man's voice.
My trip was postponed due to traffic. So I'll stick with ya guys for next.... few years.

Seems fine but unexciting, it's a lava spike stapled onto Stone Rain. It's a decent curve filler if you don't have any other turn 3 play, but I'd rather have FotF to affect the board.

Haven't tested much, is card advantage important enough in the mirror?

If haste wasn't a thing, I'd always draw in the red mirror. Since hellrider is no longer a card, I'm considering it. Since BTE draws aren't really hard to beat and that's the biggest worry, I think drawing might be viable. We'll see how many times I cast reckoner on three to get it chandra'd on 4 :)

I was testing against a dual colored red deck so I brought it in against them, thinking back yeah against mono red its pretty dumb

Also just using the alpha strike mode on her is the same as flames of the firebranding the first wave of tokens, so maybe versatile enough?

There are differences, but I've been told (I not really good at comparing faces myself) that it's actually pretty close.

And I think we can all agree the attitude is spot-on.

Seismic Stomp is a card.

Also Legion Loyalist.

Suddenly Elspeth doesn't look so scary. Even having access to 1 blowout card post board goes a long way.
