So, I've decided to let the facial hair grow out.
Not sure if I wanna go hipster coffeeshop barista long, Duck Dynasty long, or wizard long.

I was a super gay like Alex, until I went through RT's patented 'How to be a fucking man' course. While I did fail on the first day, the manliness I absorbed in the 15 minutes I was in his presence have made me into the beastly machine I am today.
:') so proud.

When my confidence proved lacking
he showed me the light of the Red.
When my strength proved waining
he showed me the power of the flame.
When my faith proved lost
he showed me the girth of the Mountain.
May our thirst be ever Red, but never sated.
Amen.

Val:
I watched that wacky control game from last night and I was amused following along. If that's representative of a typical game, I should be playing around counterspell a lot less. You often had a hand full of land and a bunch of draw spells.
Yeah, I saw that. His opponent was also awful. "I'm getting milled to death right now, better play Sphinx's Revelation X=9 and Staff of Nin!"
He might as well have just conceded like 8 minutes earlier.
Yep. Either he was absolutely terrible or he thought he was dead anyway due to mill (and he was) and just cast it
out of frustration. He could have just as easily stuck to the strategy of timing me out.

Scry lands spoiled. EOB tapped and scry 1. RARE.
Ew.

Looks like Dos Rakis is biting the chump until next set...they decided to mix up friend and enemy lands. RW and RG have the scry leg up for now as well as access to 12 duals (though I don't see many decks wanting to play more than 4 CIPT mana sources).

Ew.
Esper gets 2 of 3 of it's duals too
and people are saying control is dead lol

Yeah, insignificant. I'd never play more than 4 taplands in a two-color deck, so all they have over RB is the scry.

I love these lands. Finally we'll play some mono-duo action!
Still thinking if playing 4 Shocks 2 Scry Lands will be enough to play 4 Rampagers and 2 SB Revelries in RDW.

I'm ok with using scrying guildgates in a midrange deck. However, looks you're sticking to just shocks if you want a 2-color low curve list.

I'm talking about 22 land deck with low colour requirements. I was thinking about using some forests as the only cards that need more than 1 coloured mana from me are actually BTE, Rampager and Revelry. I'm using Pyrewild Shaman on 3CMC slot.

These lands are great. They don't really enable 3 colour decks - how many CIPT lands can you really afford to run? Not many. No more perfect mana, and the scry is very welcome in the sort of decks I like to play; more decisions always favours the stronger player. Great design.

The Scry lands are unexciting but eminently serviceable for what they want to do. Still, I'm glad they're going to either slow down 3-color goodstuff decks or force them to play an uncomfortable amount of shocklands.
Z, you need to change Mark of Mutiny to Act of Aggression in your R/W brew.

Intereresting mix of colors on those new lands. Will we get another cycle with the rest, but with another ability attached? Lightning Strike mentions Shrine Peak in the flavortext, so maybe Shrines?

Nah. They will probably do the whole cycle during whole block. They stated that when releasing Theros they wanted to give Gatecrash colours more time - as when RtR came out, BW/RW/RG/UB/UG were still waiting for their lands to come up.
I like the design and love the fact, that we'll not longer have to face 3 colours "I have cash to play goodstuff" decks. These were boring as fuck and they didn't even promoted good plays. Whenever I lost to such a deck, I was more often slapped by it's price tag than by it's controller. I'm not saying that format should be cheap - I'm saying format shouldn't open you all the possibilities just because you're not scared of paying 1000$ for cards.
I'm still not sure how it will actually affect us, red players.
Mono Red at the moment feels very underpowered unless all you need to win is Red God and enchantments aren't gonna be more relevant. (some kind of sick, cheap
creature with the only downside of being enchantment)
Gruul Deck Wins can handle playing Forests. It mostly utilizes Ghor-Clan Rampager - and as long as you don't use Phoenix/Reckoner in 3CMC slot, you are totally fine.
Dos Rakis probably has to limit it's mana greediness (mostly Spike Jester). Doesn't get access to Scry Land which sucks (as I'd say it's the best colour pair to play them).
Boros doesn't care that much. It limits Chained to Rocks and 2CMC white cards usage. But unlike Gruul, you get the access to at least artifact removal from SB without splashed colour.

My understanding is that the lands will all be of the same variety, just as the shocks were split between RTR and GTC. Chapin commented that he expected them to do friendly duals first and then enemy, but obviously they decided to mix it up. Given that they are scry lands, I'm at least glad to see B/W coming out now rather than U/W because it will give black-based control a little edge for a while. That is, if black gets a sweeper that comes down before T6+...

Oh...I didn't notice that it was the Gatecrash pairs. That explanation makes total sense actually.

Budget me is relieved that these new duals are just slightly better than Guildgates, which means that I can use those instead for the time being. Easier on the wallet.

In terms of 4CMC creature we are reliant on our God. I'm not sold on his effectivness + my shitty budget reason, I can't get my hands on it.
We don't get access to Enchantment removal which might be relevant. Artifact removal is most probably relevant, and a bit of flexxibility would be cool. For example Wear/Tear looks amazing in this format and it can get even better.

On the other hand, shocks will certainly rise more than the expected levels.

^Could be so, yes. I'm dropping off a few kgs of old commons soon for credits and perhaps I should get some more shocks for them. I had planned to pick up a couple of Deathrite Shamans, because I can't see them dropping in value over the next couple of years. But the same can probably be said about shocklands as well. So maybe I should pick up Godless Shrines or Sacred Foundries instead.

How does Wear/Tear matter? The gods are INDESTRUCTIBLE.
From WotC:
"A permanent that has Indestructible cannot be destroyed, and cannot be killed as a result of lethal damage. Similarly any Artifact, Land or Enchantment with indestructible is immune to destroy effects."
Many articles have already commented on the fact that for certain
strategies it is best to keep the gods as Enchantments because it limits their removal to exile effects. They are a horse of a different color, Yarpus...they are going to be immensely difficult to remove unless some specific hosers are printed. This is obviously a driver behind the Legend rule change (besides of course raising the appeal to casual players who want to be able to play their badasses regardless of what their opponent has on the board).

So... am I the only one that actually likes the new Scry lands?
As someone who enjoys Aggro, I certainly like anything that slows a format down.
On the other side, if I'm playing a slower deck, I find there's almost always plenty of opportunities to drop a CIPT land without hurting my tempo and a free Scry in those situations sounds pretty sweet.

Oh, and since R/W gets a Scry land and R/B doesn't, I am leaning in a more Boros-y direction for a Midrange deck now.

Dumb rules question inbound.
When you have an effect like
Flamespeaker Adept that checks for each time you scry, how exactly does that work with something like Scry 2? Does that count as 2 instances of Scry, or just 1 instance, but 2 cards deep? Will Flamespeaker get +2 or +4 for Scry2?
I'm guessing "Scry2" counts as 1 instance of scry and she just gets +2, but would like confirmation.
Posted: Fri Sep 06, 2013 3:08 pm
by redthirst
The number after the Scry is just how many cards the Scry affects not how many times you Scry - so no matter what that number is, you've only scried once.

by rcwraspy
Cool, that's what I guessed but wanted to be sure - thanks!
On another note, I like these new lands. I think they're deceptively powerful, and I hope I can pick up sets before the prices rise once people figure it out. I can't wait to get the R/B one, but I still think I'm going to build "Pyro-seize" when Theros hits regardless, and just slot in the lands and anything else when the lands drop in the next set. I even think they're playable in a Gruul aggro deck. They help make a borderline keep more keepable in any deck they're in, but with the Gruul aggros, or something with a curve like DragonMaster, you're already accelerating a lot through dorks or BTE, or even the new sac Satyr if it's good enough for play, that you'll sometimes not need the untapped land and the free scry will be great.

I like the scry lands; they're just not all that exciting. Then again, I haven't had an opportunity to actually play with scry, so I'm probably underestimating them. They'll at least keep Burning Earth useful if not exactly desirable, and they will slow stuff down, which is always good.
I'm not thrilled by the fact that they are rares, especially since it looks like they're Guildgates with a bonus stapled to them. For that, they should be uncommons.
At least they shouldn't be crazy expensive. My budget for cards has gotten drastically reduced over the past few months between lawyer's fees, car repairs, and now medical expenses for a pregnant wife and an accident-prone daughter.
As for the Gods, kill their worshippers. Sure, they're an enchantment with an upside, but enchantments still have the same weakness: they are useless without creatures. Nylea and
Purphoros, in particular, need creatures to do something. The others aren't exactly game-breaking on their own.

Remember that Gruul also gets Scryland.
And Gruul is actually awesome either for Aggro or Midrange.
Your removal sucks, I know. You only get Ground Assault as shitty Skred.
But if you ever ask for fatties, Gruul is your best fatty bro.
He's like "What's up? You wannt dem fatties? Here's your Rampager, have fun with bitches."
