So what are you all taking to FNM

Postby Dodger » Fri Mar 29, 2013 1:19 am

For those participating. I just restarted playing this month so probably taking Naya blitz, probably for the last time as I ordered the stuff for jund aggro and should have all that by next week. Trying to get a feel for what I want to do in this format as I rebuild my collection while also at least not getting embarrassed.

Since I moved to Charlotte about four months ago, I've been playing the same deck. It's what I played at GP Charlotte as well.

[deck]Boros Flash - Gweivyth[/deck]
Creatures (28)
4 Stromkirk Noble
2 Reckless Waif
2 Stonewright
3 Ash Zealot
3 Nearheath Pilgrim
4 Boros Reckoner
4 Restoration Angel
4 Hellrider
2 Zealous Conscripts

Instant (8)
2 Aurelia's Fury
3 Boros Charm
3 Midnight Haunting

Mana (24)
4 Sacred Foundry
4 Clifftop Retreat
2 Slayers' Stronhold
1 Plains
13 Mountain

Sideboard (15)
1 Nearheath Pilgrim
2 Rhox Faithmender
2 Thundermaw Hellkite
2 Rest in Peace
3 Volcanic Strength
1 Rally the Peasants
1 Midnight Haunting
3 Act of Treason[/deck]

I am going to move a Dynacharge into the sideboard instead of Rally the Peasants, since I've never
actually used Rally. Dynacharge is a little easier to play with, though.

I'll be trying out my Tres Rakis (Grixis) list. It's R/B Aggro splashing blue mostly for Izzet Charm. So far I've met with some success with it. I'm looking to see if it has any staying power.

This sounds an awful lot like when I tried to splash blue in Boros for Azorious Charm. Tread carefully, friend. The mana is the most frustrating part.

If I play FNM, I'm pretty much guaranteed to be rocking Mono Red.

But I have been getting silly with a version of Saito's 20 land Gruul list. Who knows? I might just try it out one day at FNM.

[deck]
4 Rakdos Cackler
4 Stromkirk Noble
4 Burning-Tree Emissary
4 Flinthoof Boar
4 Ash Zealot
4 Boros Reckoner
3 Hellrider
3 Ghor-Clan Rampager

4 Rancor
4 Searing Spear
2 Pillar of Flame

2 Temple Garden
10 Mountain
4 Stomping Ground
4 Rootbound Crag[/deck]

In a pinch, Khaos' beard can help turn this around.
I rarely skip a Khaospawn wall of text because I know there is always piss at the end of the rainbow.

So far, I've only had one game where I got mana screwed pretty badly. Then again, in that match I drew 5 lands over two games, so I was screwed no matter what I did.

This is what
I have for lands. It's working out fairly well so far. The overlapping shocks do a good job at making sure the checklands come into play untapped. Boros Reckoner is the most mana intensive creature, but I have 22 red sources, so I can usually cast him with no problems.

[deck]Grixis Lands[/deck]

I'll probably go back to a more consistent Dos Rakis build eventually, but I like experimenting with different builds.

There's a 1k coming up next weekend, and I'm thinking I might play that Jon Stern Bant Hexproof list.

Why did people stop playing it? Was it the printing of that edict? Because that card is basically nonexistent in the format, it seems strange that we'd be meta'ing around it.

The Bant enchant deck has garbage matchups against any other aggro deck. It was a notable dog to mono red pre-gtc and decks are even faster now. So if you expect a lot of aggro, it's not a good choice. Should still be well positioned against midrange or control heavy fields.

I'll be playing ub tempo or at least trying to make it work.

Did the card quality really rise for aggressive decks, though? The only notable cards aggro decks really got were Boros Reckoner and Boros Charm. Bant Hexproof doesn't actually care about either one of those cards. Boros Reckoner is far less impressive when it doesn't have profitable blocks, (or no blocks at all) and Boros Charm is mostly
irrelevant other than "4 you?"

It seems to me that Electrickery is real technology in the matchup, too. I could very much see the deck just blowing out a tournament for no reason.

Hexproof gained more duals, so that's a thing. It opens up Sacred Foundries and Godless Shrines, which allow for spicy splashes out of the board.

BTE openings are the issue. The velocity decks built around those interactions are much faster.

I could honestly see brewing an Enchant list around BTE. The idea is the same as playing the BTE Gruul lists.

Sounds interesting; GR Enchant or splashing a third colour? Bloodrush could be a thing as well?

[deck]
4 Ash Zealot
4 Burning-Tree Emissary
4 Gor-Clan Rampager
4 Lightning Mauler
4 Rakdos Cackler
4 Slaughterhorn
4 Stromkirk Noble

4 Madcap Skills
4 Rancor
4 Searing Spear

4 Rootbound Crag
4 Stomping Ground
10 Mountain
2 Forest[/deck]

Something like that? Numbers and choices are up for change, more the concept at this stage is important.

The wife's planning on playing the 2 CMC Immortal Servitude deck. She played it last Tues, and it was actually really competitive against most of us.

I'd want to be playing white because Ethereal Armor is a real card.

Hmmm, I'm starting to think about resurrecting my Sphere of Safety deck now.

Invisible Stalkers, Spheres, Ethereal Armor...I also had Curiosity and Abundant Growth in there. I don't really think the last is needed with mana the way it is now. I'd also add Gift of Orzhova now, cause Lifelink, yo.

Hmmm, crappy FNM deck brew time, HO!

I'm playing UWR Flash. Pretty Standard list, a couple personal touches.
Standard hobos who play budget garbage should be looked upon with suspicion.

I'll most likely be taking mono-white-splash-red aggro to FNM again. It works pretty nicely.

Been playing a lot of Gruul Savagery for the past few days to play something new. Maybe Naya Midrange in the next few weeks if I complete the cards.

Missing the abrupt decay's I need for jund aggro, so looks like Naya Blitz gets one more week. Did top 8 a win a box thing at the LGS last Saturday with it. So we'll see how it does one more time. Still getting back into the swing of things only playing again for a month.

I wasted 3-4 weeks worth of testing on Delver, but thankfully found the light of RwDW.

[deck=Speedbump's RwDL]Lands (23)
13 Mountain
4 Clifftop Retreat
4 Sacred Foundry
1 Boros Guildgate
1 Slayers' Stronghold

Creatures (26)
4 Stromkirk Noble
4 Rakdos Cackler
4 Stonewright
4 Ash Zealot
3 Thalia, Guardian of Thraben
3 Boros Reckoner
4 Hellrider

Burn (11)
3 Pillar of Flame
4 Searing Spear
4 Boros Charm

Sideboard (15)
1 Pillar of Flame
1 Thalia, Guardian of Thraben
3 Thunderbolt
3 Mizzium Mortars
3 Skullcrack
3 Mark of Mutiny
1 Boros Reckoner[/deck]
This'll be the deck I test today, and most likely take to the Melbourne PTQ on Saturday. I went 3-1 with a similar list last night, losing 0-2 in the final match of the night to a weird variant of the mirror. I lost because I kept rather dainty and awkward 1-land/2-land hands that would work quite well in the early game, and proceeded to die to
not drawing a third land either game. Variance happens to the best of us. XD

I played a few more games, and I managed to stomp him. I think that not dying to variance is why I'm adding the 23rd land. I could try to play one more [card]Slayers' Stronghold[/card] and one more Boros Guildgate over Mountain if the testing tells me it's ok to do so.

I'm fooling around with Naya midrange.
Eric, Ren and Jensen were activists
Heads loaded with theory, their hearts are filled with passion
Shared the same left wing politics
Liked the same music, they were part of the protest movement
Now, Anna presented herself as a feminist
Studied the way they talked and dressed
Fashioned herself an anarchist
Eric fell in love with Anna at the meeting of the crime think conference
He didn't know it but Anna was an FBI informant

Assuming something better doesn't come along, I'm playing the Bant Flash deck with some alterations to make it a real boy because if I can't cast Sphinx's Revelation then I honestly don't want to live on this planet anymore.

Playin' Naya Blitz for 1 month each week, just analysing the local metagame for my SB, and now for 2 weeks, alway TOP 2-3 with it.
Boros and grull charms in SB made the game vs most of games, with swith of frontlines or thalia.

I've played this week the aaron barich naya aggro list, with another SB (3 volcanic strenght, 1 tormod's crypt, 3 skullcrack, 2 boros charm, 2 Domri Rade, 2 Mizzium, 2 Ray of revelation) :
Went 3-0, really hard but did it :
Round 1 vs gruul aggro : 2-0, advent wurm and boros charm G1, volcanic strenght + rancor G2...
Round 2 vs Zombie BWU revival troll with loleth troll & blood scryvener : 2-1 :
G1 i'm totally rush by a 7/6 troll T2 + 3 zombie castable from Yard.
G2 otp : side Tormod's (no way another rush from graveyard) and boros charm x4 for double strike effect : i beat him with the wurm, didn't pop one one T1 and he tought i was playing a grull aggro^^
G3 : otd : -2 dryad -1 exp1 + mizzium for "control" : i bet him with wurm again and rancor, but he'd just draw scryveners and geralf : reckoners made the deal.
Round 3 : wtf is this deck? xD
G1 : i rush him with geist - GCR blood rushed &
rancor, he'd just played farseek and a loxodon
G2 : i saw a stomping G1 (the land he farseeked) so i enter volcanic strenght and as i am otd, i side the usually otd vs aggro : mull 6 for me, 2 checklands, i kept.
took him to 5 HP, then... he played... blasphemous act, clear the board, then pop ruric thar and a Sigarda, Host of Herons : GG... xD
G3 : SB otp², i'm really suspicious about those legendaries... i'm siding Ray of revelation, volcanic strenght again and boros charm) :
i beat him on additional turn, with a double reckoner from me and a 5 damage redirect on blocking to him, with a spear for the finish
on the board, he had , since turn 2 : acidic ooze, then tajic (lol) and the angel... so weird deck, certainly 2-0 before me on skill average...
then on last turn before i bet him : he poped gift of orzhova... thank you ray of rev. ^^
so typically a last round with a FNM deck

was really fun
conclusion : i'm really not sure i'll bring the naya aggro of aaron to the PTQ next week, but this
was really fun to play voice and advent

I bought the DGM Event deck and beefed it up with cards from my collection/cube. The store I plan on attending has like 1-2 real decks, and the rest (6-8 others) being 14 year olds who can't build their own decks. I like my odds.
