[Meta] So clearly in Khans we're seeing power level rollback

Postby Alex » Sat Sep 06, 2014 12:54 am

Rosewater has said a few times in the past that they tend to do this at the beginning of new blocks, based on the power level of some of these spoiled rares, it looks like that may be the case here. It seems a little too soon for that to be happening already, since the last particularly powerful set was Innistrad. I don't feel like we've creeped into a point where the power level is too high. What gives?

What format? There has been like maybe 4 cards spoiled so far that would be playable in a RTR-M15 standard based on powerlevel. I guess Utter End and that artifact might have some use in eternal formats or modern. I hope you aren't calling the weakass 5cmc creatures that don't do anything powerful.

I'm just hoping there will be a viable land-go control deck in standard when Khans is releasted

I'm saying basically none of them are powerful. After Innistrad, Return to Ravnica felt like a huge step backwards in power level. This feels reminiscent of that.

This does set feel on the weaker side. It also has an obsession with 5 drops. I'm not sure why they're going in this direction, but it reminds me of how Riot balanced League of Legends for years. Everything got weaker and "fun sized".

I believe this is part of an admitted ongoing powering down of Standard. Five mana sweepers are now the norm, and it looks like you won't need a four mana one to handle this sets creatures.

On MTGS you can't say a set seems bad without being thrown to the nerd wolves, but damn, this set seems bad. Fattening it up with fetches is just lazy. They are anti-Scry and only work with one wedge mechanic (delve). I'm glad they are being reprinted, but compare now to LANDFALL!
Standard hobos who play budget garbage should be looked upon with suspicion.

I mean I'm not going to say that it's bad because the environment (format) could be awesome, but it is certainly a lot closer to battlecruiser Magic than what we got used to. I mean, this time two years ago I was playing with Batterskull and Wurmcoil Engine while board wiping for 1RR and fetching my Kessig Wolf Run with Primeval Titan, now I'm paying 5 for board wipes and 4 for Vindicate that doesn't hit lands.

I wasn't really whining so much as making an observation. I like battlecruiser Magic though so I might actually enjoy it.

That sounds fun, can we have that format?

This RTR-M15 was my first standard and I think it's great. I hear oldtimers say the same thing - that this was one of the best standard rotations ever.

Since this is a 3 color wedge set, shouldn't we expect a higher prevalence of large CMC cards than your typical monocolored or even dual-colored set though?

Yes, but with that generally comes higher power-level cards.

Regardless, I definitely do expect battle cruiser magic to be the norm (which I perSonally enjoy).
You gotta understand, I love the beatdown. I really do. I always have.

Beatdown is hard, though.

Jamie the general consensus is that devotion Standard is one of the worst ever

Devotion standard was one of the stalest ever, at least. I honestly don't remember the last standard format where two-three decks stood at the top for the entire year almost unchallenged.
