Oh man, I saw lordi live, it was hilarious. No one had heard of them and everyone was confused. It's like GWAR singing KISS.
You saw Lordi live? I am jealous as fuck...

Also, they are kinda like GWAR, excepts not shit. :scared: (but seriosuly, I dislike GWAR immensly)

Aww, did the van canto sabaton baby get overlooked? And here I thought I was gaining converts for VC :P

Lesse', what other weird metal do I have... Well, there's the Finnish Monster guys... Called Lordi, dress up in huge monster costumes and play metal.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uGe8qID9gSs
Needs less instruments and more people going "bumbumbumbumbum"
What does, the vancanto/sabaton lovechild, or the Lordi?

And if you want
more Van Canto, I've got more Van Canto :P

If you guys want a really fucking out there type of music, listen to the Wham City movement stuff out of Baltimore. It's Dan Deacon, Future Islands, and a third band I'm forgetting.

Here's one of Dan Deacon's best. It starts simply, almost comically, with the din of people singing nonsense lyrics but then, from out of nowhere, Deacon starts singing about how good it would be if humanity just vanished in the middle of the song. Then the nonsense lyrics return at the very end but their meaning is almost totally different from when you heard them in the beginning.

If that's too out there, give this a try:

2:35 in Paddling Ghost is the bombastic stuff I'm talking about. The song gets this spiraling, orchestral quality. Sort of like Bohemian Rhapsody (not in terms of sound but in terms of how the song gets an operatic feel to it).

I'm enjoying your weird electro stuff spam, but it's becoming increasingly difficult because my roommate is playing league and like TO YELL AT THE TOP OF HIS LUNGS WHILE PLAYING. Which makes keeping the levels adjusted difficult.

You could blast this:

This is one of Future Island's best songs. Like Dan Deacon's stuff, it verges on the comical but that allows for the lyrics / tempo to come very close to flying off the rails (in a good way). It's also about turning your back on humanity and returning to nature.

by the western walls, i'm a cursed hand
by the eastern seas, i'm hardly wrong
i can swing myself down from these trees
when i crave a
glimpse of weary sands

i whisper the tongue like an old friend
i cherish my time here alone
i swing myself down from these trees
to help me laugh brushfires again

When the singer performs Old Friend live - check out any of the youtube vids - he does this frenetic dance which, despite looking goofy as fuck, manages to whip a whole room of people into a frenzy. It's like he can barely contain the music within himself so it spills out in these spastic motions, sort of like Iggy Pop.

I guess the formula for a good 'Spam' song would require bombastic flair, lyrics about returning to nature or forsaking humanity, and a singer's voice strained to the breaking point from their borderline howls.

WU LYF's "We Bros" is a perfect example of this, which is why it's my favorite song of the year.

I don't like songs like "Hurt" though. I think it's tougher to write a critical song about the human experience with a faster tempo than a slow song like Hurt which really mires itself in loathing.

Like Titus Andronicus could have spent a whole album dwelling on existence being pointless but they get it out of the way in the first sentence (in their newest album) and rock on from there.

Even my pick for "saddest song ever" has a pretty quick tempo to it. It's about a failing marriage that's imploding based on apathy rather than actual arguments. Ted Leo manages to make the music have this awesome "spiral" sound, as if the song itself is swirling down a drain. It's really damn sad, not because it has "I
cut myself" type lyrics in the vein of Hurt, but because it's about how time eventually destroys everything that people build.

His cover is devastating and the video is even more powerful. I mean, I have both versions of Hurt in my itunes but I rarely listen to them. Cash's rendition is way better than NIN's imo.

HA! Great reference.

Seriously though, I try to describe songs for people so they know what they're getting into. Pitchfork Media reviews do this all the time. There's a Dan Deacon song called "The Crystal Cat" and one reviewer described it as "a man getting sucked out of an airlock in space." When I listened to it, I was eerily surprised to find that it was perfect music for an astronaut getting sucked out of an airlock. Listen to it and picture some astronaut frantically holding on to a railing as he struggles not to get sucked into space:
