Congratsulations Zemanjaski.

I haven't been playing burn this season, but what do ya'll think about Elixer of Immortality in the sideboard for the burn mirror match.

By playing it you're trading for 1-2 cards from them, while putting more gas in your deck relative to land to increase your chances of top decking useful spells. The problem is that you're presumably running in place of another card which more then likely would deal 2 damage.

RW Burn was very popular at my local store, saw about 6 or 7 people piloting it at FNM. They're all using somewhat sub-optimal lists and not running any of the spicy sideboard tech that folks are running here, though.

Nice list. I played around with 2 Assembles in the
sideboard and it made for some hilarious blow outs G2, but cutting / adjusting anything in this deck's list is really tough. That card is a lot of fun to watch it get out of control, though. Even better when people try and race it.

I'm pretty sure it wouldn't have matter but at the 3rd game, when you swung your Chandra's Phoenix into his Nightveil Spectre and he blocked with it and you casted Searing Blood before damage. If you casted it after damage was dealt you could've gotten both phoenix's back to your hand instead of just 1, but you still had mana up for a burn spell to get the other phoenix back. Great games tho ! Congrats on the GPT win.

G1 - Ouch :( Be interested in what you mulled though. May I suggest thorough pile shuffling after a mull too :)

G2 - Nicely played - your composure was excellent :)

G3 - What zeromuzuki said :)

Really well played - your understanding of the match up was apparent throughout and I was very impressed with your composure - so much so I've had to mention it twice :)

Man.. been getting horrible luck after my PTQ against GR/Jund Monsters... any tips? Or my mindset been too bad. I sideboard in 2 FC, 1 Mortars, 2 CtR, 2 BO for 4 Ashys and 3 Skullcracks. Without the Firedancer in my sideboard I am at a lost..

Right when I did that I realized I misplayed there and could have gotten both back. Testing partner pointed it out too after the match was over. That played happened from doing the same thing with Ash Zealot all day. Definitely won't happen again.

First hand was all burn and a mutavault. Second hand was all lands. Third hand was all burn no lands.

And thank you sir and everyone in this thread for contributing. The idiscussion in this thread was extremely valuable and was largely responsible for my performance at the GPT.

Actually, that shouldn't matter either way. Searing blood's trigger goes to the stack when the creature dies and since phoenix died at the same time, it would have still been legal to get it back as well.

GPT Nagoya Report, 1st

Just a quick report today, mostly just a games recap.

Rd1. GR Monsters

I win the roll and curve Searing Blood into double Phoenix. Not much more to say really.

Game 2 is quite reasonable. I don't have a Phoenix or Young Pyromancer, so I am on the burn plan (which is often fine, it makes Scavenging Ooze weaker and makes their removal dead); its going well until he topdecks a Bow of Nylea (he told me after he had two in the board, expecting burn, which was reasonable). I was able to put him dead to a topdeck 3 point burn spell, but I missed the crucial draw and the game slipped from my grasp afterwards.

Game 3 I had shock for his dork into young pyro. He passed without playing a second land and the game was immediately over.

2-1

Rd2. Esper Control

My opponent won the roll, telling me it was his first non-FNM event. I didn't have a
threat, and had two Shocks in my opener, so it was a bit of a struggle, but he declined to counter any of my spells until he was at 5 life; so I was able to tap him out on his endstep, untap and kill him. You know, routine stuff.

Game 2 he mulligans to six and I Firedrinker on Turn 1. He plays Blind Obedience and succumbs to the Firedrinker plus Mutavault into burn draw.

2-0

Rd3. Esper Control

I lose the roll but the round goes much like the last one; him declining to counter and me whittling him down EOT. I flood a bit though, but find a line that brings him to three if I tap out (I have Zealot and Mutavault as attackers), which if not good enough, at least leaves me drawing live to burn to kill him (I know he didnt have Jace in hand at this point). Instead he taps out for Blood Baron and my jaw hits the floor - apparently he maindecks three. Well fuck me kid, you got me.

I mulligan to six on the play, leading with Firedrinker and Young Pyromancer on turn 2 before he
casts Blind Obedience. His mana is a bit awkward from there and I start making tokens, before Boros charming his Verdict, so he scoops.

Its his turn to mulligan in game 3 and when he misses his 4th land drop for a turn I quickly run him over with Mutavaults. He's a bit salty afterwards, but he did congratulate me after and did Top 8.

2-1

Rd4. Mono Black

Playing a member of Australia's best mtg team. Game 1 is really interesting and played at a very high skill level on both sides. unfortunately, I don't draw an answer to his Spectre so I have to try and burn him out before he can cast something relevant. He kills me with a Boros Charm in something so ironic we both couldn't help but laugh.

Game 2 I am on the play so am all-in on creatures. I get a reasonably aggressive draw of Zealot into Phoenix, though discard wrecks my hand. I topdeck quite strongly though, and am able to burn him out before he can really get any offense going (he had taken out Pack Rat, so wasnt really able to take an aggressive position easily).

Game 3 on the draw I side out all creatures and try to next level him. He has no early discard, so his removal sits in hand, while I topdeck Assemble the Legion. Here's his face:
Image

2-1

Rd5. Mono U

Opp declines my offer to ID (at this point we'd be locked in). I win the roll and his first play is a turn 2 cloudfin (kept double scryland). Ash Zealot into Phoenix backed up by burn quickly finish him before he can really get going

Game 2 I have turn 2 Young Pyromancer and he doesn't have an answer.

2-0

Rd6. ID into Top 8

Quarterfinal. Mono U

Because of the new Top 8 rules I am on the play and have a stupid all insane burn hand (two searing blood, two boros charm, three land inc. vault). He gets crushed.
n
Game 2 he has a very strong draw, but a YP and Asuka keep me alive, buying me a huge amount of time. I am eventually able to manufacture a board state where my opponent has to go all-in on the attacks because of his dwindling life total ~ I am at 11, he attacks with Master, 4 tokens, Mutavault, Frostburn and Thassa, with a freshly played Frostburn back on defence. A Searing Blood on one token and a Jet to the face give me enough tokens to survive, and I kill him on the crack back after using Chains on his blocker (thanks Magma Jet!).

2-0

Semifinal Golgari Midrange

Opponent is play a cool brew with Elvish Mystic, Lothleth Troll, Dreg Mangler, Varolz, Reaper of the Wilds and some removal and disruption. I mulligan to 5 game 1 and don't draw a second land, so the strat of the match is pretty frustrating.

Game 2 I have Searing Blood for his Elf and a Phoenix. That and burn eventually get him after he spends four removal spells to try and slow the bird down.

Game 3 he
keeps a slow hand with only a Troll, that gets Chained. Otherwise his hand is all removal and he opts to Decay my Pyromancer instead of the Chained. I guess there are arguments either way. I scry into a Phoenix and that does him in.

2-1

Final. Esper Control

Opponent agrees to concede to me (I can go to Japan, he can't), but still wants to play. Fair enough. Game 1 is more of the usual, beat you to death with Mutavault(s) and hold up Skullcrack. Kill you when you need to go for a desperation Revelation.

Game 2 Young Pyromancer makes a horde of tokens and ends the game. My opponent tells me that he isn't running Supreme Verdict in his 75; he'd cut it for the full 4 thoughtseize and 2 more removal spells; improving his matchups in the mirror and against MBC. Still, kind of awkward against Asuka right?

2-0

@ Zem 'k I've looked at the SB :) And I'm thinking something like this?

Vs Esper
IN 4 FDS 3 YP 1 Spark 1 Mutavault
OUT 3 Shock 3 Cttr 3 Searing Blood

Vs B (on the play)
IN 4 FDS 3 YP 1 Spark 1 Assemble 1 CttR
OUT 3 Shock 4 Magma Jet 2 Searing Blood

Vs B (on the draw)
IN 1 Assemble 2 BO 1 Spark 1 CttR
OUT 4 Ash Zealot

Vs G/R & Jund Monsters
IN 2 MM 1 Spark 3 YP 2 BO
OUT 4 Skullcrack 4 Ash Zealot

Vs U Devo
IN 2 MM 1 Spark 3 YP
OUT 2 Skullcrack 4 Ash Zealot

Vs Mirror
IN 2 BO 1 CttR 1 Mutavault
OUT 4
Ash Zealot

EDITED to remove Spark Vs B and put more land in for the mirror :)
