Went 2-2 last night at the Win-A-Box playing UB control. Match one was over quickly as I got paired against BG midrange which is very difficult for UB to beat, especially when your opponent sees Liliana in his opening seven both games and you have no counters, Duresses, or Pithing Needles. Crushed the next two matches and got destroyed in match four vs Naya Humans nut drawing me twice. Just wasn't in the cards I guess.

On a positive note, I traded off a Resto Angel and four Supreme Verdicts for four foil Fire and Lightning versions of Figure of Destiny, a Grim Lavamancer, a Student of Warfare, and a Koth. Then I found someone with three Steam Vents I needed to complete my playset, so I found a couple of extra cards to pick up (Aetherling, Supreme Verdict, some other $1 rare I'm forgetting) and threw them all in so he could get my two Deathrite Shamans (hated trading them but I really REALLY want to go after the rest of the
shocks I need aggressively). Finally, I got an Advent of the Wurm, Trading Post, Strionic Resonator (for Modern), and a Mutavault for my Scavenging Ooze, so I now have a full playset of Mutavault as well. Came out ahead in all my trades so I'm happy.

Any ideas on how they're going to Djinn this one up?

Or it's some kind of alternate way of casting it for another effect, something similar to Evoke?

I've been looking for Koths for the longest time, but nobody that has them seems to like the stuff I have. Also (unrelated), I got bored a couple nights ago and started reading a few of the EDH primers, and I commented on your Savra one and Khaos' Nin one. Just thought of mentioning it since I enjoy discussion on EDH and people don't look there often.

I kind of like it, but I'm not sure Boros Reckoner is where you want to be. I feel like Ash Zealot would be better there since you have so many spells to deal with your aggro and midrange matchups anyway, making Boros Reckoner not as necessary as he would normally be in those matchups. I also think the one-of Pike is a winmore.
I was thinking along those lines myself. In the matches I won against photo, Ash Zealot played a big role. First turn Duress to wipe away Blind Obedience followed by Ash Zealot followed by another Ash Zealot created a lot of early pressure. That would create a good curve from Zealot into Phoenix into Hellrider.

So bounce Reckoner and mainboard Zealot. Would you put Reckoner in the side or remove him entirely? What should I
replace him with?

I'm also thinking of taking Exava out and putting Thundermaw in her place. That would require putting another land in the side to go up to 24.

The Pike is there to help race. I like putting it on a Pyromancer or a Phoenix. Makes for a good attacker or defender. And I kinda like 1-of effects as a kind of wildcard for the deck.

I just so happened to spot a Koth from a
few feet away in someone's trade binder so I told him I was looking for a couple and that's how it all started. He had tons of good stuff but most of it was eternal stuff, so I stuck with what I knew I would play. I was really looking for Knight of the Reliquary but he didn't have any of those, so I figured the nice, shiny Figures would be nice, especially since I was getting a good deal on them.

I meant to reply in the EDH thread yesterday but forgot (was on my phone).

Except it should probably be a 10/10 with flash, with the power and toughness equal to length and girth.

I question the lack of Young Pryomancer in a deck with so many cheap spells.

Also, LOL Hellion
Crucible. Clearly a budget decision.

Here are some things you can expect from Theros:

A 3/3 with three abilities that uses fate counters
Multiple cards with the word “nongorgon”
A high-profile cycle of legendary permanents that are not creatures or lands
A rare card with five words of rules text in which one of the words is “planeswalker”
An artifact creature that appears to be a big horse made out of wood
A 5/5 giant snake that can be cast for
A multicolor Minotaur lord
A card that could have been in Modern Masters (Do we FINALLY get Thoughseize?)
A giant that brings fire to humans
A creature with a saboteur ability (it has an effect if the creature
deals combat damage to an opponent) which is one of the Power Nine

Here are a few names of cards you will see:

Anger of the Gods
Chained to the Rocks
Lost in a Labyrinth
Rescue from the Underworld
Underworld Cereberus
Witch’s Eye

Finally, here are some of the creatures you’re going to see (note that not all of these are creature types and is only a partial list):

Catoblepas
Chimera
Cyclops
Harpy
Hippocamp
Hundred-Handed One
Kraken
Nymph (Alseid, Dryad, Lampad, Naiad, and Oread)
Pegasus
Satyr
Siren
Triton
Personally I hope it's Remand. I really want to be in URx with Young Pyromancer being in Standard.

Yeah. I would have had at least 3 Pyromancers in there. I just thought it funny that a $23 deck took down decks worth $400. I know it's not the cards, but rather the player that's the most important, but good cards don't hurt. ;-)

I'm honestly not too shocked. It has a lot of reach.

If you thumb through some of my posts
from a few weeks ago you'll find a spell-heavy mono red deck I tested for a bit. I think this deck could be mashed together with mine to make a solid performer.

[deck]
Creatures (24)
4 Stromkirk Noble
4 Rakdos Cackler
4 Young Pyromancer
4 Burning-Tree Emissary
4 Lightning Mauler
4 Chandra's Phoenix

Spells (16)
2 Faithless Looting
3 Pillar of Flame
4 Shock
4 Searing Spear
2 Brimstone Volley
1 Flames of the Firebrand

Lands (20)
2 Mutavault
18 Mountain
[/deck]

And hey, we have a shell for rotation as well.

[deck]
Creatures (24)
4 Foundry Street Denizen
4 Rakdos Cackler
4 Young Pyromancer
4 Burning-Tree Emissary
4 Firefist Striker
4 Chandra's Phoenix

Spells (16)
4 Shock
4 Mizzium Mortars
2 Wild Guess
3 Flames of the Firebrand
3 open slots

Lands (20)
2 Mutavault
18 Mountain
[/deck]

I have the urge to play some sort of Delver / Pyromancer UR counter-burn deck in Modern. Anything similar with good showing in recent tourneys?

Asked this in the Rulings section, but it looks like that doesn't get a lot of traffic. So I'll ask here:

Will Pithing Needle prevent Bloodrush abilities from being activated?

Example: Opponent casts Pithing Needle naming Rubblebelt Maaka. Can I no longer use Maaka's bloodrush ability?

Not necessarily. Dude probably just came back from the days of olde and didn't upgrade his list. There's nothing wrong with Hellion Crucible, it's pretty much the same thing as Mutavault. (They'll do about the same amount of damage per game.)

Correct, Bloodrush is an activated ability that can be activated from your hand and can be stopped by Pithing Needle.

Nothing in Modern that I know of but URb Delver with Pyromancer as a four-of has been putting up a fight in Legacy. The black splash is for Cabal Therapy and it is nasty.

If it is, that's an error on my behalf. Mental maths while in a meeting isn't my strongest area.

Tec Edge probably should just be Blackcleave Cliffs for consistency, but that's boring.

Guess I should look at the complementry spells rather than focus on the creatures.

BTW what version of the UB were you running at the tourney.

ATM my main deck is listed with the same sideboard as the LSV list from the stream.

Probably stupid question incoming. Admittedly, I'm still learning my way through Modern.

Why Tec Edge over Ghost Quarter? Do enough decks in Modern run enough basics, and is Tec Edge not necessarily as slow as I feel it is?

I am no modern aficionado, but i assume due to path being premium removal, most decks run basics. Even in my 4c gifts deck I run 3 basics

It's the fastest nonbasic land hate in the format that gives a straight 1 for 1 trade without taking up a spell slot. GQ is bad for tempo since the basic comes in untapped.

It's too slow for Tron though, which makes me have the sad.

Ah, gotcha. And since Z's list is essentially a tempo deck, this is actually a huge deal.

Thanks!
