[Q&A] Dragon's Maze playables.

Postby Alex » Fri May 03, 2013 12:50 am

So what's it look like, ladies? What cards are we looking forward to in Dragon's Maze? Personally I'm not terribly excited for the set, since my list didn't gain anything nor did it see anything that hurts it.

Interested in knowing what cards I should be looking to pick up, though.

The only cards I ordered from DGM were a playset each of Exava, Rakdos Blood Witch and Skylasher. I'm not really super psyched about anything else. Although I can see how Voice of Resurgence could get out of hand quickly.

EDIT: Crypt Incursion looks interesting. Don't know how devastating it could be against Reanimator until I can test with it.

Yeah I didn't see much beyond Voice of Resurgence, which is why I didn't even bother to go to the prerelease. Although Advent of the Wurm seems playable.

I didn't go to the prerelease either. [card]Maze's End[/card] as the promo? Crap. Best promo I ever got was Sun Titan. Maze's End is no Sun Titan. I'm going to wait and see how much Voice of Resurgence drops in price before I pick up a playset.

I have played with voice and advent. My verdict is that they suck in anything but a token-populate shell. Advent might be ok in a bant delver deck, but I have yet to try that.

I kinda figured that was the case. That's why I refuse to pay $25 each for Voice.

Spike Jester is a great little addition to Dos Rakis.

Sire of Insanity looks to be good, but we'll have to see how it plays.

My favorite cards so far are Turn // Burn and Far // Away. They both seem like they'd fit well in my UB/grixis tempo decks I'm playing. Warped Physique seems like it could replace ultimate price too.

Whenever a new set comes out, I pull what I think will be the "likely to get played somewhere probably" cards from the set in playset quantities. Here's what I pulled from DGM:
[cards]Renounce the Guilds
AEtherling
Uncovered Clues
Blood Scrivener
Pyrewild Shaman
Phytoburst
Skyslasher
Advent of the Wurm
Beck // Call
Blood Baron of Vizkopa
Catch // Release
Council of the Absolute
Deadbridge Chant
Deputy of Acquittals
Exava, Rakdos Blood Witch
Far // Away
Laviana of the Tenth
Legion's Initiative
Notion Thief
Obzedat's Aid
Plasm Capture
Putrefy
Ral Zarek
Ready // Willing
Render Silent
Ruric Thar, the Unbowed
Sin Collector
Sire of Insanity
Spike Jester
Tajic, Blade of the Legion
Tithe Drinker
Toil // Trouble (I am a big fan of Sign in Blood effects)
Turn // Burn
Unflinching Courage
Varolz, the Scar-Striped
Viashano Firstblade
Voice of Resurgence
Warleader's
Helix
Wear // Tear
Maze's End[/cards]

Bear in mind I don't expect most or all of these to see play, but they're the cards in the set I think are most likely to see play. Maze's End is probably not a real card, for example, but it is a Thawing Glaciers, and Thawing Glaciers was a good card (there is also next-to-no lost EV in holding copies). Viashano Firstblade will probably never see play outside of Limited, but in the event it becomes the sickest card in Boros Aggro that somehow becomes the best deck in the format, I now don't have to hunt down 4 copies through piles of commons. I didn't even like Legion's Initiative or Blood Baron, but they're worth holding onto in the event they find a deck to occupy since their value is going to go steadily down until they do.

If you happen to pick up the commons/uncommons in draft or sealed, the ones above I would keep in a shoebox somewhere. Most of the rares in the set shouldn't stay over $1, the Mythics probably will not command any
demand unless/until they're actively being played in something (Deadbridge Chant, Council of the Absolute), and cards that are already being played in decks likely will stick around their current price, so if you can't risk losing value on the more valuable cards in the set, just go with what you know.

I agree with this list as a "these may end up seeing play but who knows" type of list.

But I don't see any of them necessarily being format-warping. And few if any as "must build around me."

it's a good thing i posted the list in a thread called "dragon's maze playables" instead of "dragon's maze format warping cards" ;)
