just because todd anderson bullied his wife until she broke down and allowed him to fulfill his neckbeard dream of playing mtg full time while neglecting all of his other duties does not make him a bad guy
if you have to bully someone into following you down a potentially life-averse path they are probably not a person who should be following you down that path, be it because your *friend/wife/parol officer* doesn't want to support you or be it because the path you're going down is very likely hazardous to the health of yourself and your *friend/wife/parol officer* or because your idea is objectively stupid.

todd anderson's journey -- for the time being -- paid out (see also: brad nelson), but if i were in either of their shoes, i would have
gotten a divorce. it's wrong of him to bully her and be an abusive piece of shit, but it's also wrong of her to not look out for her or their mutual self-interests by staying with him when he's working on a plan that is "support the two of us with random payouts at random intervals that may come in sparse amounts if they come at all that also incur a number of large expenses" without some kind of alternative plan in mind.

like i get sometimes you just have to go with your partner on the way to their life plan journey and rich or poor you stick with them, but when your partner says i'm going to play a card game targeted at teenagers to support us and drops the rest of his life to accomplish that with no actual goal in mind (because you cannot plan you're going to win every grand prix, etc, because that is both impossible and moronic), that's less easy to get behind than "I want to put my savings into starting x-project or starting a company or owning a business"

The card, like Tibalt has WAY to much variance. Apparently it's "the hotness" in control mirrors, but how many creatures are you playing in Control? A couple aetherlings? Angel of Serenity? Neither of those game ending bombs can be got after the first use of Ashiok, granted it might be hard for them to kill it after a couple activations but oh wait Detention Sphere and Abrupt Decay exist. Maybe you get an omenspeaker if
it sees play. That's a fine use I guess?
The card gets max value in Aggro matchups, but gets steamrolled in aggro matchups.
There was a card called Nephalia Drownyard.
Like I'm pretty sure it's going to take some format balance before you can safely cast and try to win via Ashiok, but if you think this card is Tibalt you are just wrong.
I must respectfully disagree on this point. I don't think Ashiok will ever see serious constructed play, outside the possibility of someone going deep in Block Constructed. Drownyard is a whole 'nother ballgame, because it's uncounterable, doesn't cost mana, is harder to remove and lets you play more lands while having an incidental win-condition in the same slot. The opportunity cost is way lower than any non-land card you would want to play in
a similar slot.
nephalia drownyard cost 4 mana each turn, this costs 3 mana once, and has incidental applications outside of its mill ability, and after the initial mana is uncounterable.

while jace is "strictly better" as a win condition, costing 3 mana and having additional effects beyond "does mill your opponent" that are permanent, and needing to be attacked or causing your opponent to gradually die are all real things.

you're saying it is unplayable because it is uncounterable versus drownyard forgetting that people in the format drownyard was legal in supplemented their decks with big jace who was also a spell and was also more expensive than this.

i understand the concern that drownyard did not add to your spell count in your deck and i think that argument is fair.

all of your points are still valid against jace, memory adept and jace memory adept costs more, doesn't offer a secondary out against boards he's being attacked on, and jace memory adept competed with nephalia drownyard and still saw play despite taking up spell slots in decks.

i'm not even arguing the card is the tier-1 breakout card of theros, but saying the card will only ever see sideline block play or that it's a 3cc tibalt is just as ludicrous as saying its the best card in theros prepare your butts for mono ashiok battles going into the first month of theros at least

I actually approve of Ashiok. She may not be the best now, but she will be. Mark my words.
have we 100% confirmed ashiok is a woman? i wasn't sure what gender is ascribe to a face-melty horned demon gray skinned thing
Actually, we have confirmation that Ashiok is gender neutral. How progressive! :monocle:

blue controls only creature win conditions right now are hardcasting angel of serenity, playing permanents and making thasa a creature, aetherling, or some combination of mill cards, or some kind of general very large black creature with a drawback if UB is the deck you're playing.

the only alternatives to this are victory via mill.

aetherling is very good but it cannot do all of the heavy lifting in a format as supported for aggro as theros is.

If Ashiok seems bad to you, I suggest playtesting Ashiok. The question is if UB/Grixis/Esper is good enough for Ashiok and Jace, not vice versa.
